This kit come with a molded in vinyl top. I want a hard top, can I just sand off the molded in vinyl top smooth....will this work?

Yes. If I remember correctly, this has the chrome trim molded on the sail panels, (C-pillars) and A-pillars. This too will need to be eliminated if you're doing a version sans vinyl top.

Didn't the Landy Charger kit version come with a smooth non-vinyl roof?

There are also versions available with no vinyl top- the earlier (but still readily available) Dick Landy '68 kit features the '69 side marker reflectors and no vinyl top

Buy the Dick Landy version. It will be near impossible to sand the vinyl texture off and have the smooth roof come out perfectly.

If it's plastic, you can do almost anything you want to with it. Sand paper does a good job on plastic for removing stuff. So yes it will work.

To save a bunch of work I'd look for somebody who will trade you a '68 Charger body, or see if you can pick up a '68 kit on the cheap. I needed a vinyl top on my junker '68, and I swapped the '69 body with great ease....and great results as well.
