Crazy8 Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Well I knew I was going to go to the local Hobby Town USA over the weekend, but I wasn't sure who was going to come with. Originally I asked my 18 year old step son but when it comes to 18 year olds, girls first bonding with parents last. So then I was also asking my wifes brother in-law who has been named my "BFF". Well my BFF was out fishing so I asked my amazing wife. Now could I have gone by myself? Of course I could. But its more fun to do things that include others and I especially love shoulder time with my wife. Well as we are walking through the hobby shop, my wife is perusing the isles and checking out some of the models. I was slightly shocked by this. I say only slightly because only about a week before while I (and eventually we) were watching Dr. Cranky's youtube videos on our TV she thought his dioramas were very cool. She also made a point that I showed people the "Breakfast of Champions part Eight" video so they could see how real and how awesome Cranky is at doing rusted out cars. Anyway back on the track here. When I noticed my wife not only looking but handeling the boxed models, I asked her somewhat jokingly, "would you like one?" lol Turns out she was really liking some of the muscle cars and commenting on how she wouldn't paint them the color that the picture was showing. I think after I do my huge 32' Ford project I may be having her pick out my next models and even help me with paint and stuff. I just thought it was kind of cool that the wife was actually kind of interested in this stuff. Most of my hobbies she has zero interest in al though she wants to "take" my photographing hobby for herself...lol
Jantrix Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Very cool. You are very lucky. Once they see what we do as art, then worlds open for them.
Guest Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Hey Wayne, I live close to you, I'm in East Bethel. We should meet up sometime.
Dr. Cranky Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 That's definitely a great sign. I wish more ladies would build models.
diymirage Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 thats cool mine is very supportive i bounce ideas off her and have her help me decide on rims or colours she doesnt really build herself but with her working 80 hours a week (on a good week) i cant blame her this is her on the hood (you know, like the whitesnake video)
Mercman Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Not my wife's but my daughter's builds. Trophy winners both of them.
diymirage Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Trophy winners both of them. the builds or the daugthers?
Crazy8 Posted February 21, 2012 Author Posted February 21, 2012 Well thank you all for the replies. @midnightprowler: That would be cool. Yeah I am not far at all. Im actually right in town even. i live on The Ponds golf course. I share a backyard with hole 2...lol Wait I'm sure there is a joke in there somewhere...lol @Dr. Cranky: Im sure she wont build but it would be cool to even just get input or build something where she makes all the choices. @diymirage: Nice car and lady Oh I remember whitesnake. lol @Mercman: Well thats still cool that the daughter builds. I havent been in the hobby long but it seems just as likely to find a woman mechanic, but always neet when you do.
FASTBACK340 Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Good for you Wayne. It's a great feeling isn't it? Mine has made me a baseball watcher and Met fan (for what THAT'S worth these days....)and tolerant of her book collection (Think models take up space?) and in return she set's the reminder on the TV for Top Gear (which she loves...) and NHRA events (which she watches with me) It's all about being open-minded and compromise. Glad to hear of guys with family acceptance and involvement!
Crazy8 Posted February 21, 2012 Author Posted February 21, 2012 @Fastback. Its funny you mention all of that. I only got back into this hobby because my troubled stepson was wanting a model. So, like everything else I do, I went full bore and am teaching him a few things. not to mention it gets him and I some private time together and out of trouble so that all good. My wife makes fun of me because of all my hobbies...lol But shes more than willing to "take" my photography one. She is completely supportive of me and all my hobbies, it truely is a blessing.
Austin T Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 One day I brought my Girlfriend by the house to show her the stuff I make, she likes them all except the ones that arn't shiny. She also told me about how she built a model one time(A story involving a general lee with backwards lettering). That's one of the many things that I really like about her,she doesn't judge something without trying to do it herself first.
espo Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 I also have a wonderful and supporting wife who will not throw anything in the trash unless I see it first. She has seen me , like most of you here, use some of the "most off the wall things" when building a model. She once wanted a '67 Chevelle SS in purple. Thats what she wanted so thats what she got. I really do not care for a purple Chevelle with black and purple interior, but it made her happy. It's good to see others who are able to get yunger people into modeling. I belive it will help them learn patience and skills for solving problems .
LoneWolf15 Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 I traded the wife in ! The girlfriend ? Now that's a big difference when it comes to the hobby ! She has been there every step of the way , loves the hobby , she can build and has an eye for detail , that is second to none ! Stood right there with me when I " threw " myself off the cliff with the DVDs , fly or crash and burn , didn't matter ! She was there through thick and thin , the whole way . I found out how much easier life is when you have somebody actually pulling in the traces with you , rather than against you ! The hobby is a whole lot more fun these days , believe me !
