vintagestang Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 I need to drill a hole in sprue just a bit bigger than a paperclip and it needs to be pretty long.
Ramfins59 Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 You need to use a Pin Vise with at least a # 70 bit. Go slowly and as straight as you can. You can only go as far as the drill bit is long though.
vintagestang Posted February 21, 2012 Author Posted February 21, 2012 Thanks. I don't have a pin vise but I have a drill press and a vise
Steven Zimmerman Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 If you're careful, and the bit isn't long enough, you can drill from both ends. Its easy once you get the hang of it. I do this with every rear axle housing I build....'Z'
martinfan5 Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Get your self a hobby lobby coupon and pick one up, I got one with 5 bits for a little over $7, I think they sell the testors pin vise
VW Dave Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Thanks. I don't have a pin vise but I have a drill press and a vise Bad idea....drilling very small holes is better done by hand. I don't have a specific pin vise, all of my small bits seem to fit pretty well in my X-Acto #1 handle
vintagestang Posted February 21, 2012 Author Posted February 21, 2012 I did it. Not as precise as I would like but I did it. I will look into getting a pin vise though.
race06 Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Your local torch gas supplier should have a small drill 4 cleanin torch tips, too 4 bout the same price.
1zebra3 Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Looked at my torch cleaning tips and they are just round for appx 3/16" and then have a knurl or file like surface the rest of the way. Nothing like a drill bit they are very old .Is there a new design to them?
von Zipper Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Just picked up this set last week, some times I put the part that needs to be drilled in the cordless drill chuck and hold the tiny drill bit in my fingers, making sure to pull the drill bit out to un-load the chips so it does'nt get packed up and break the bit.
Jon Cole Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Christophers photo shows what you need. Find a set of sizes from #61 to #80, and don't be surprised if you occasionally break one or two. I keep a list on my phones Word program of replacement bits I need, some hobby shops do sell by size bit. A pin vise is good to have, but I guess a #11 knife handle will work.
espo Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 After you have used a "pin vise" you will wonder how you ever built a model without one.
