Yes that can common on most cars, you have to remember the cars are painted on a assembly line and they are not wetsanded and then polished before they leave the manufacturer, only high dollars cars will come from the factory with flawless paint.

Once upon a time .... If your new car had orange peal ? You took it back to the dealer and they'd take care of it . This is back when humans painted the cars , not computer controlled robots !

What passes for custom paint these days is deplorable . Not all the blame lies with the guy behind the gun , today's products are not the greatest .

I miss the paintwork of the '60's and '70's , it was something to behold !

Very seldom did you see orange peel on the sixties cars painted with acrylic lacquer...

The original paint on my '68 is as smooth as glass. Getting thin on the sharp edges from the years, but SMOOOOTH!

My wife's cousins own a body shop. In the late 70's through the eighties the local Cadillac dealer sent all the new cars to them before they went to the customer or hit the showroom floor.

They repaired the sink marks in the C pillars and took care of any blemishes in the pain! On every car!

I can sure remember the old guys talking about the Fords and the factory "orange peel" on the new cars!

One guy claimed his didn't have it so he sent it back to get the job done right!

Most of these guys worked at the Chicago Heights Ford plant!

Johnny, jus remember Ford used Enamel as opposed to Lacquer . enamel is PRONE to Orange peel unless it IS polished out . Hey, I have painted enough stuff before , remember , I worked two Earl Schieb places .............. Ed Shaver

Donn I agree with the lack of quality is getting worse. But I disagree about todays products. My 1:1 painter is from the old school...real paint done by a pro. His jobs use quality materials, the body is sealed before it gets messed with, and as you does it with a proven method. He will shoot most anything, but shoots more HOK than I have ever seen. Point is the products today are many times better than the good olde days...the DOWNSIDE is paint prices...I suspect thanks to the EPA waterborne will be the wave to come....just think NO MORE LACQUERS......or enamels due to VOC's

I must admit though the days of the garage show winner are long gone :(

One point to remember in regards to models, while many real cars do have orange peel, it needs to be scaled down like everything else or it will be the focal point of the finish. Imagine the orange peel on a model enlarged 25 times.

Scary part of the new water based paints ? Up here , each body shop had to send their painters to class on how to use them . If an individual does not wear the protective clothing and a respirator , you will be dead within two weeks after being exposed ! This is what they were told in the class.

This is going to be good for the environment ?

The full story is the CLEAR.

I shoot a little Auto Air but the recommended clear is 2 part urethane...Also in the PPG waterless classes, my friend was told about adding cross flow in his downdraft booth as the water flashes so slow you need a heat gun. What is happening with all this you ask...its bs,lies,nonsense.....heard many more...bottom line the EPA is going to try to remove anything solid in the air......

Awhile back , I was asked to test shoot a new line of paint products designed for the Europeon hobby market . I did so , along with 5 other individuals from across the US spectrum .

Hands down , we all flunked the product ! Gloss that turned into semi gloss after flashing out , nozzles that failed , pebbled surface , the list went on and on !

Seveal weeks ago , I'm in the booth struggling with a black paint job , past the edge of freaking out . Then , I smelled it ! The same odor that I had experienced with the " Europeon " paints !

Needless to say , the air turned blue in the booth as I cussed and roared at the top of my lungs . Kathie came running into the shop to see what was the matter , I simply told her , " Sniff the air " ! She knew in an instant what I was referring to .

Sorry , Mike , we agree to disagree , again ! Lol ! Give it some time , and mark my words ! We have some real garbage coming our way , paintwise . Give me the old paint any day of the week , much more durable , with room to work within it's given parameters .

I wonder what could be in the waterborn paints to kill someone in two weeks?

According to what was taught in the class ... When it is absorbed into the body , either through the skin or the respiratory system , it solidifys and the body cannot break it down and dispel it . It is highly toxic to the human system .

Thank the tree huggers that the new systems are way more dangerous than what we commonly had in the past!

Keyword here, water-BORNE, not water BASED. What is being applied is not "water soluble", but can be disturbed by moisture before clearing with a solvent based clear. I have worked with it. Not a fan...

But still, a respirator is well advised.

I know a few people who should be dead by now, myself included.

Who the heck told you this BS?

As I said , two different guys who had to attend mandatory classes for this . One , who is one of my best friends , is dying of cancer because of said stupidity !

Watching your friend die by inches is no day at the beach . What makes it worse ? All because he was too rock headed to wear a respirator when spraying or doing bodywork .

Too many youngsters around here to be calling it BS , by the way. Let's not teach anymore bad habits than is necessary ! Believe me , I'm guilty of it too ! Something like this has a tendency to bring the facts front and center and smacks you right between the eyes with it.
