Austin T Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 So i'm over at a friends house and I start talking to him about a model i'm working on,then he says this to me "Hey that reminds me,I have some old models in the closet my dad got me when I was little."I say oh cool, not expecting much. The he pulls out a thunderbolt II a 1/20th scale GMC Cyclone and a ford f-150.At first I had to ask where and when he got the Thunderbolt II,then I had to explain to him how rare it was.He has two kits I would love to have and he doesn't even build models!I really wished I would have said that it's not rare, then I could have gotten it cheap.Darn.If you have any similar stories please share them.
Scott Colmer Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 (edited) Here is a fun one. Back on the late eighties I had written an article for a local newspaper that talked about the revised interest in car modeling. A few weeks later a gentleman contacted me through the newspaper and said he had some models to sell. I arranged to go to his home - it was in a nice neighborhood. He was a nice guy and we sat in his living room with his wife and talked for quite a while. He had a nicely built 1/8 testrosa on his mantle. Finaly he was ready to let me see the models. One was a poacher alpha romeo and there was also a original two in one T kit. I think the was one other kit. He ended up selling me the batch for 100.00 dollars. The he say I think I can trust you, but you have to promise not to tell anyone where this is. He takes me out to the garage and h has three Ferraris. Two are 308s, an one is a GTO client from the 60s. He had restored it beautifully. That was a million dollar car. No wonder he wated to be careful who he showed it to. I sold the poacher kit for 100.00 and kit and kept the rest. Scott Edited February 27, 2012 by Scott Colmer
peekay Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Around 1990, as intersest in model cars was fast fading, I made an offer to a local model shop; If they would halve the price I would take all their Johan kits off their hands. I got about 20 models for 9 franks each, at the time about $6.50. There was one each of most of the then current re-issues - eg. 60 DeSoto, the Cadillacs, Dodges, Plymouths and so on. The only double was the AMC Rebel.
Austin T Posted February 28, 2012 Author Posted February 28, 2012 Andy, you could have asked him what his plans were for them and since you mentioned he does'nt build models he may have asked you what would they be worth to you.And since he is your friend, you could have made a reasonable offer for them without insulting him of course and you never know, you might have had the kits. Thanks for the advice, but as great as that is,my name is Austin.LOL.
Steven Zimmerman Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Years ago, I lost interest in this hobby, and GAVE a model car collection with about 250 unbuilt kits in it to a good friend's son,who was about 14 at the time. About 10 years later when I had a renewed interest in this hobby, i asked him if I could have ONE of them back (AMT 69 elky, of which I had given him 4 kits)...He replied"Yeah, fer a hunnert bucks !"...I never spoke to him again, but was not 'unhappy' when his trailer burned down with all those kits in it (he was not hurt)....'Z'
