uncle potts Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Just came home from a swap meet with a 62 dodge lancer, already assembled and not in the best of shape. I do however want to take it all apart and rebuid it. This car has a soft spot in my heart because I had one when I was 17. However I'm not shure how to get the pieces apart without destoying any parts. Do any of you have any suggestions for me? This is new to me and you all seem to have great suggestions when another member of the forum is stumped. Help, please.
jeffs396 Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 (edited) Paul, wet that baby down & place it in the freezer overnite...it will be even MORE brittle than the 40+ year old styrene normally is, but be extra careful and break the glue joints, prying/wedging with the 'ol exacto knife helps also. WORK SLOWLY and CAREFULLY! Good Luck! Edited February 27, 2012 by jeffs396
JollySipper Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 (edited) A lot of guys say that you can soak the model in water, then stick model in large zip-lock bag then put in freezer. As the water expands in the joints it forces the pieces apart. If you need to strip paint, LA's Totally Awesome seems to be a popular choice. edit: sorry to repeat^^^ we posted at the same time! diymirage Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 this seems to be the most popular way http://www.ebay.com/itm/TSD-450FPS-Airsoft-Guns-spring-air-power-Sniper-Rifles-M-SD700-bb-2X-Mags-Comob-/290669148463?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43ad3b392f
Patrick2005 Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 I just scrape at the joints and work them very carefully.
a/gass Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 yes water and freezer some sturbin stuff youll need to make little cuts or drill small holes to get water in to snap it appart.
uncle potts Posted February 27, 2012 Author Posted February 27, 2012 Thanks alot guys, you have all been alot of help. No paint envolved, so don't have to worry about that. I'm sure the wike will really wonder about me this time.
59 Impala Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 I've not had very good luck with the freezer method. I have used Tenax liquid cement to get parts apart. I just kept brushing the glue on the joints until they (the joints) loosened up and I could pop them apart. I did this with an original 63 Impala that I restored. I could not get the seats out of the interior tub and I used this method to get them to come apart. All of these wethods that have been said here do work, I just haven't had good results with the freezer method. Maybe it's just me. Dan
mcandela Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 Buy yourself a gallon of degreaser from Costco or Sam's, the type that comes in a black gallon. ($3.00) Drop the model in it a couple of days and it will start to break apart by itself. Use gloves, this stuff is strong. You can see the degreaser can be used to strip paint also.
62rebel Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 i've tried the liquid cement trick but had bad luck with it... the cement weakens the plastic around the joint, not the joint itself, when i've done it, and i end up with parts having chunks break out of them. maybe i'm doing it wrong.... very possible. most of the gluebombs i've rebuilt were in pieces when i got 'em....
