GrandpaMcGurk Posted April 12, 2012 Author Posted April 12, 2012 Here ya go Bart.....do ahh diddy diddy dum diddy doo..........yeah, the air filters have seen a little road grime.
Bartster Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 There she was just a walkin down the strip! That's a hot lookin mill, Don!
GrandpaMcGurk Posted April 13, 2012 Author Posted April 13, 2012 Dog gone it Brad......now I can't get that tune outta my head! Oh well, back to the Zonker. As you can see in the photo the 1/6th die cast metal heads and plastic valve covers are way too big for this odd ball size heater. 1/8th parts are too small. I didn't want to cut down the metal heads as they would add more weight to an already hefty engine........here's what I came up with. I traced the bottom and top of the 1/6th head onto a piece of paper, reduced it on the 'puter and used the reduced copy as a pattern. I cut the pieces from 0.20 sheet styrene.
GrandpaMcGurk Posted April 13, 2012 Author Posted April 13, 2012 I quartered a 1/8 TDR Hemi head and attached the pieces to the styrene part. Bonded the other piece I cut from styrene to the TDR chunks. I'll fill in those voids with plastic scrap later.
GrandpaMcGurk Posted April 13, 2012 Author Posted April 13, 2012 I'll be using over-sized zoomies for the the exhaust.....perhaps a little too noisy for a street rod but I'll cobble up some super traps or baffles for 'em.
GrandpaMcGurk Posted April 13, 2012 Author Posted April 13, 2012 (edited) Test fit.........looks like I'm going to have to smooth those carbs out a little. Edited April 13, 2012 by GrandpaMcGurk
GrandpaMcGurk Posted April 13, 2012 Author Posted April 13, 2012 Cutting down this valve cover was a pain in the butt because of all the compound curves and indentations but here's what I wound up with.....still need to drill the plug holes and add the cover bolts. The textured paint is just the base coat, I'll be painting them flat black to simulate a "wrinkle" paint finish. Anyone interested in seeing how it was cut down and assembled......if so I'll post pics of the other side as I do it.
GrandpaMcGurk Posted April 14, 2012 Author Posted April 14, 2012 Put a damper on the crank snout (harmonic balancer). Have to be able to time the thing so I added a timing mark & tab, Started to tinker with some of the accessories...carbon fiber fan, alternator and coil.
cobraman Posted April 15, 2012 Posted April 15, 2012 Very cool. I don't recall seeing anyone do that before.
GrandpaMcGurk Posted April 15, 2012 Author Posted April 15, 2012 Thanks Ray, stay tuned.....I may have another thing or two you haven't seen before. Dem bones, dem bones, dem dry bones........don't go there Bart, I don't need another tune stuck in my feeble brain.
GrandpaMcGurk Posted April 15, 2012 Author Posted April 15, 2012 Ol' school cork valve cover gaskets and fuel proof carb gasket material just for good measure.... Coil and water hoses have been added...now I have to do hose clamps....man, it just never ends, mumble, mumble, moan & groan and so forth. Just kidding, I'm having a blast building this thing...thanks for the inspiration Ira. You know, there's been a lot of chatter about folks on evil bay having more money than sense, so just for giggles...when this thing is done, I'm considering listing it with a stupid price just to see what happens........should be interesting don't you think?
Dr. Cranky Posted April 15, 2012 Posted April 15, 2012 Oh LORDY, this is pure eye candy. Wonderful work, and I can't wait to see how those bones are going to fit into this build.
crazyjim Posted April 15, 2012 Posted April 15, 2012 Looks like you're on a roll, Don. Keep it going, man. Dem bones, dem bones, dem dry bones.
GrandpaMcGurk Posted April 15, 2012 Author Posted April 15, 2012 (edited) Thanks Virgil....just another kid havin' fun. Haven't seen Eyegore in awhile, is he feelin' okay? Edited April 15, 2012 by GrandpaMcGurk
GrandpaMcGurk Posted April 16, 2012 Author Posted April 16, 2012 (edited) Mr. Bones isn't real fond of having his picture taken but I managed to grab a few shots when he wasn't looking...... Look in the background...I shot these outside and while I was shooting that potted pine withered & croaked! Edited April 16, 2012 by GrandpaMcGurk
GrandpaMcGurk Posted April 16, 2012 Author Posted April 16, 2012 Here's a few close-ups. I was considering giving him a Mohawk but changed my mind and decided to make a teeny leather aviator cap & goggles instead....like the photo below.
GrandpaMcGurk Posted April 16, 2012 Author Posted April 16, 2012 (edited) I applied some waxed ship rigging cord with CA to bones skull to simulate the sewn seams and chin straps on the aviator cap.......I'm using electrical tape to do the individual panels as it looks like polished leather to me. crazyjim Posted April 16, 2012 Posted April 16, 2012 Sick! You are one sick puppy, Don. The worst part is that I like it.
