I've been gettin' down to business on this project for a few days, and although I'm going to be posting it in the PAZH CBP Dr. Cranky started, I think it would do well enough on its own topic also- that way those who don't frequent that topic thread will have a chance to see it.

It starts with the 'RIDES MAGAZINE' Custom Collection 1972 Chevy Pickup kit from AMT/ERTL.

This kit came in a care package of sorts sent to me by a good friend of mine along with a few other kits you'll be seeing me post build topics on in the future. It is the 2005 release.

The idea came from a post on the CBP thread I'm currently involved in. One of the members posted some reference photos of 'technical' trucks and it got my brain rattling. For those who do not know what a 'technical' is, here is a quick reference post and photo-

A technical is a type of improvised fighting vehicle, typically a civilian or military non-combat vehicle, modified to provide an offensive capability similar to a military gun truck. It is usually an open-backed civilian pickup truck or four-wheel drive vehicle mounting a machine gun, light anti-aircraft gun, recoilless rifle, or other support weapon. (ref. Wikipedia)

Anywho, back to my build...

My brain rattled on for a while until I got the kit to make one. The idea is this.

Given the subject matter of most of my builds, a lot of you already know I'm a big military buff, and I have a tendency towards WW3 and Post-Apocalypse type scenarios. Not that I hope for it, just that type of subject matter intrigues me beyond comprehension.

The year is 2023, and we've come under heavy attack from enemy forces. Our military is stretched thin, and civilians are taking to the streets to fight for their freedom alongside their military protectors. Modified civilian vehicles are the now commonplace on the battlefield that was once peaceful America. The vehicle my build will be representing is being used by a medium sized pocket of resistance in the battle-scorched desert plains of new mexico. Some higher end tech is used in the reinforcing of the vehicle, as well as the arming of it.

Here are some progress pics of what I have gotten done already-

I love it, Rob. Those look like the same panels put on the Discovery or something . . . like modern day zimmerit. Very interesting. Keep it going.

Also, Rob, thanks for posting that Toyota reference picture. I often wonder how long after a revolution begins do people start modifying vehicles into road warrior types.

Thanks for the kind words guys! I'll be getting some more progress pics up here in a bit. But yes, Zimmerit Plate was my inspiration for the reinforcing.

....You guys haven't seen the gunner's system yet, I'm quite proud of it.

And I would hope that only a week would pass after full scale invasion/revolution before people started modding vehicles to fight the enemy.

More progress to come in a bit!

Ok, here's the update I promised.

The primer has dried, the drybrushing done, and the dullcote has been applied and allowed to dry.

This build is going to go through several different stages in the paint and decal process. This process was to give everything a bare metal feel, with a little bit of a faded and aged look. This is my basecoat before I apply the color coats in layers to simulate chippage and damage. The interior is faded as well to give the initial 'clean age' look, but will be dirtied up a bit in the next few stages.

Here's some pics-

The gunner system was inspired (sort of) by the Millennium Falcon's gun system, very loosely.

It has a round targeting reticle mounted above the operating handles, and a small status screen mounting by the right side of the gunner's head.

The cannon is based on a .30cal chopper minigun, and is mounted atop a device allowing for minimal rotation and up/down motion.

I did use the stock bed as a base. I did NOT, however, use the bed cover, if you'd like to trade something for it.

all i would need is the bed sides...as a just in case...but oh well...i dont need the cover

The technical has a name now, Unified Improvised Taskforce vehicle 283 (UNIT 283).

The argument that the Geneva convention wouldn't apply to the situation of post-apocalypse, keep in mind that this build is DURING the conflict, and the marking and rules would still apply.

I foam-brushed the green overcoat on with my stippling technique, and detailed the body with a fine brush. I used a flicking technique (after I masked the windshield) to lay down the initial dirt and mud spatter, and finely misted Krylon Camouflage ultra flat sand for the dust cover.

The decals are customized and layered. The armor panel covering the rear window has two 'FIRE PANEL' decals, on is slightly damaged, e other is hidden behind the seat of the gunner system. UNIT 283 is placed on the passenger rear panel, and 'T-16576' is placed on both doors opposite the handles.

You can't make it out because I don't have a good light source or high enough res camera, but an M4 Carbine is laying across the passenger seat.

This build isn't done, the VEHICLE is, but I have to make a diorama base for it for photo ops :D

Looks great Rob . Is that armor plating in the bed as well?

Yes, yes it is. :D Can't have too much protection!

I hope you enjoyed this build, I'm still working on it so keep checking in! I think I might add shell casings in the bed, and some burn marks and bullet impacts later on. Not to forget the photo op base either!

Where did you find a 1/25 M4

How is this build going, Rob? I'm interested in seeing what else you've done with it.

It's sitting on my display shelf right now, I haven't done much with it in some time. I'll be working on some dioramas for it and other vehicles soon, but I gotta wait for some time off work.
