JollySipper Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 The next project I'm getting has these for some small details. They sound like a cross between PE pieces and dry transfers like for white letters and such.... What are they exactly and how would they be applied?
Chillyb1 Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 They are very easy to apply; well, in most cases they are. And your description is pretty good. They are usually shiny metal details like scripts and logos, or mirror faces. Their backs are adhesive and they are sandwiched between clear plastic and smooth paper. You peel them off of the paper and hold them by the clear plastic while positioning them on the model. Then burnish them down and bit and gently, very gently, pull the clear plastic off and, voila, perfect detail without having to glue anything in place. They can get tricky depending on the metal transfer and its location on the model.
JollySipper Posted March 21, 2012 Author Posted March 21, 2012 Thanks for the quick responses! The pieces are for the turbo logo and side mirrors on Tamiya's '88 911 turbo... looks like I'll be learning a new technique!
hooknladderno1 Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 A possible technique for lining them up may be to take a small piece of Dymo label tape, and remove the backing. This will expose the tenacious adhesive. Place the adhesive on your forehead or other oily part of your body to remove/reduce the adhesion(to avoid pulling off the paint). Lay the Dymo tape just under where you want to place the script or transfer. Finally, take a pair of fine pointed tweezers to place the transfer. Remove the Dymno labe tape and Voila! If by chance there is any oily residue from your skin, use a mild soap and water to remove. This technique works great for making new panel or door lines, or other straight lines on unpainted surfaces(minus removing the tape). Here is an example HTH.
