Qwit Pushin Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 Recently my son-in-law purchased a '68 Plymouth GTX. I thought I'd like to build a replica, but discovered that the only kit offered is the '68 Roadrunner. Not being knowledgeable in the differences between the two, I was wondering what modifications, (other than scripts and badging) would need to be performed to the Roadrunner kit to complete the GTX conversion?
62rebel Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 which kit are you referring to? AMT has a multiple version B-body based on the '68 Road Runner that includes a '69 GTX in coupe and convertible, IIRC... the differences mainly being trim level as the RR was essentially a Satellite on steroids, where the GTX was loaded with options. kitbash the interior tub and trim parts from a GTX and the body from the RR and you got it. if you want the cleanest 1/25 body, find a JoHan Oval Stock Racer '69 RR and use the AMT chassis and trim. Monogram's 1/24 RR is not a GTX, and IIRC they don't have the parts to kitbash in any other 1/24 kit. resin aftermarket, maybe. Spotlight Hobbies usually has all of the AMT B-Bodies on hand.
roadhawg Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 I did that same exact conversion a couple of years ago, and did it as a W.I.P. here in case anyone else wanted to learn from my mistakes, lol. The grille is the biggest difference (I ended up using a MCG '66 Chevelle photoetch grille), followed by the upholstery pattern and the rear end trim/taillights (get a Keith Marks decal sheet for the '68 GTX for this). Here is the link to my build, hopefully this might help: http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=20901 And here is the finished project....not perfect, but close enough for me. Good luck, can't wait to see it!
VW Dave Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 Whenever I'm planning a replica build, the first step is always reference pics of & notes on the real car....having the RR kit and the real GTX within reach can tell you what needs to be done.

Son-in-law's car is a pale yellow with black vinyl top and black interior. Thanks again for the info.
Kaleb Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 Thanks for the information, my dad had a 68 with a 440 wedge and I want to build it in the kit form as well. I'm kinda hoping to find a 1:1 for him.
