Painting wheels

How would one go about painting the silver area in the '69 Camaro Rally Rims? Thanks in advance.

very carefully !

I use some liquid masking on the chrome portions that I want to remain chrome and paint the rest of the areas argent silver. It takes a steady hand, a fine tip paint brush and a lot of patience.

Not sure what you are working on but I believe the ralley wheels in the AMT 69 Chevelle are unplated and have the chrome hubcaps and trim rings separate, which should make painting them a snap.

Use a liquid masking for the chrome trim ring and center cap. Check that the masking liquid doesn't damage the chrome on a scrap piece. It's still difficult if you don't have a steady hand. Maybe coat the entire wheel with the mask and cut out the painted area and remove the masking from that area.

Thanks guys Will white glue work as a liquid mask?

I have heard that it will Andy, although I have yet to try it. Check it out on some scrap pieces first before jumping to the wheels in question. White glue has multiple uses and this is one of them.

You could do like Chris (Zipper) told me once. You can dip the wheel in the silver paint starting from the back side and when you cover the steel part of the wheel and stop when you reach the hubcap. The back of the wheels are open and you can dip them. That way you have a chrome ring and silver wheel. I've done it and they turn out great. Dan

Yep, ifin they're not already open. This method works great. You can see by the pics that Chris posted that the wheels look great and you don't even have to mask anything. Just make sure that you dip them level. Just dip and let dry. Dan

Would silly putty work to mask or would that be to thick to work with ?

Also did the dipping work for you ?
