DR JAY Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 Hello all. I have done some lookin' but thought I'd check with the large scale builders before I ordered anything. Who makes the best seatbelt hardware for a 5 point system circa 1969? I am converting the large General Lee into a Nichels Engineering 69 Grand National stock car along the same detail lines as my 1/25 Lorenzen Galaxie I posted in the NA$CAR section;that is to say no detail spared! I am looking for seatbelt hardware that represents something period-correct. Any recommendations? I can scratchbuild it all, but it's time consuming at best. I guess I can modify F1 style stuff if I need to, but the lever-lock style of course would be more accurate for my subject. BTW- there's some KILLER stuff being built in this section and it's very humbling looking at these builds! Thanks, Jason.
Mooneyzs Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 I have purchased some 1/16th scale 5 point harness from Replicas & Minatures the part number is RM-19D. Very nice set. they are one of the only that I know of that makes them. We need to see if Scott (aka Futurattraction) would be willing to add some to his line up of 1/16th scale photo etch pieces.
DR JAY Posted May 14, 2012 Author Posted May 14, 2012 Thanks for the tip-I'll check them out right now! Jason
Mooneyzs Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 if you need me to post a pic of them let me know. I can snap a shot of mine
TedsModeling Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 Pro Tech makes a nice 5-point harness and one of the easiest to work with. It includes photo etched hardware and belt material that can be colored. I carry all of Pro Tech's large scale items at my 1/16 scale store: http://www.tedsmodel...arketplace.com/
DR JAY Posted June 7, 2012 Author Posted June 7, 2012 Thanks for the tip, Ted. I checked your site and at this time it appears you are out of stock...
TedsModeling Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 Someone bought all 10 I had in stock. I'll have more tomorrow or Friday and can ship them out Monday. Sorry for the unforeseen stock issue.
eviltwincustoms Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 Myself, I would rather have the more realistic ones. I have a set from the Ferrari kit that should work as well, Chris I think you have that PE set. By chance are they pretty close to being the same sort of set up?
Mooneyzs Posted June 12, 2012 Posted June 12, 2012 Bart I will get a pic of the set that I have and show you. I think so far they are the best I have seen to date but one of the only 1/16th PE sets I could find actually.
DR JAY Posted June 13, 2012 Author Posted June 13, 2012 Bart I will get a pic of the set that I have and show you. I think so far they are the best I have seen to date but one of the only 1/16th PE sets I could find actually. If you could post a picture of those belts I would appreciate it...I'm still looking for something a little more accurate.
TedsModeling Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 Here is a photo of the Pro Tech 5-point harness and a photo of a real harness. I shined up one of the cast pieces to see how it looks. I could definitely give it more and smooth it out. This is sure better than a flat photo etched piece. I think the 3D texture makes it more realistic. The belt material doesn't wind through the buckles. The pieces are glued to the belts. See the photo in the above post for the finished look. I haven't seen the Min of Maryland harness. I didn't even know they made 1/16 scale items. I'll be anxious to see it. This photo courtesy of Dave Ryberg Look massive this piece looks. Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Mooneyzs Posted June 16, 2012 Posted June 16, 2012 Hello Everyone, I apologize that I haven't gotten this pics up sooner for you to see. Here are the 1/16th Scale Photo-Etch seat belts from Replica's and Miniatures that I have:
futurattraction Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 Hey Chris, Will belt material fit through the slots, or have you had a chance to try them out in the past, yet? When you have a chance, can you measure to see how thick they are? Thanks!
Mooneyzs Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 Scott... I haven't used a set of these yet but I will measure the thickness and any other measurements I can get for you.
TedsModeling Posted June 22, 2012 Posted June 22, 2012 Scott - Why don't you make your own and add it to your inventory?
futurattraction Posted June 22, 2012 Posted June 22, 2012 I'm planning to... I've got dimensions, but wanted to learn a bit more about what the R&M ones are like, to see if there are any improvements I can make.
Mooneyzs Posted June 22, 2012 Posted June 22, 2012 Scott.... I havent forgotten to get you measurements of these. just havent had the time . hope you can forgive me. I could also measure my simpson ones in my '71 El Camino. I may also still have my old set of Diest seat belts if you wanted me to send you one of them if you'd like
DR JAY Posted June 22, 2012 Author Posted June 22, 2012 Now that's the ticket! Thanks for posting....
futurattraction Posted June 22, 2012 Posted June 22, 2012 Chris, Are your Deist belts the older lever-style? If so, if it's possible for you to take a good pic of the latch assembly, in profile, with a ruler held up behind it so I've got a decent idea of some basic dimensions, that should work. Dave (comp1839) was going to see if he could track anything of that style down, but I'm sure he's been busy and may not have access to something older anyway. He sent me drawings and dimensions for a camlock style, along with all the hardware, so the only thing I think I'm really lacking is the lever-latch style. Thanks! BTW, I'm getting close to having some .004 stainless stuff ready to send to the etcher, i.e., Dzus buttons in a variety of scales. I need to post an update on my PE thread I started several months ago! LOL Scott
Mooneyzs Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 Hey Scott... The belts in my el camino are lever style as well I will take pics of both for you. with a ruller or tape measure so you can see. I am thinking maybe I could draw them up quick in my cad program and i could put the dimensions on them as well for you.
futurattraction Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 What program do you use? As long as you can save them in such a way that I can see them, we can try that. The problem that we may run into is I'll need to have everything in my program so I can incorporate the drawing(s) into my artwork that I'll send to the etcher. Maybe you could do some simple, sample drawing and send to me before you invest much time in doing the real thing... LMK your thoughts...
Mooneyzs Posted June 24, 2012 Posted June 24, 2012 Hey Scott.... I use solidworks and autocad but do most of my stuff in Solidworkds but I can save my files out in .dxf, .dwg., I can save drawings as .pdfs to show you the drawing and there are a few other ways I can save them out as. I can also save it out as an Adobe illustrator as well. I will have to do something to show you
futurattraction Posted June 24, 2012 Posted June 24, 2012 My CAD doesn't like to play real well with other file formats. I have to save my files for the etcher as DWGs. The PE folks actually use AutoCad so can read DWGs. I'm not sure there's any way for you to draw stuff up where I can simply import it into my file, so, depending on your time allowance, you can either just take the pics with ruler or if you can give me some basic dimensions and I'll do my best at putting things together in my own program - it's up to you. I don't want you to spend a bunch of time drawing if I'm gonna have to go back and redraw stuff. Hmmm... :-(
