fishdatty Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 I am just wondering what is the best choices in painting carburetors to get them realistic? I always use gold, and they just dont look right. Any help is apprieceted. Thanks F.D.
FASTBACK340 Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 (edited) Here's a color comparison on the 6 Bbl. Holley's. The base plates are silver-ish...the carbs a combination shade of grey/aluminum. On mine the center carb metering plate is aftermarket black plastic, otherwise that would be the same as the fuel bowls/body. Edited May 16, 2012 by FASTBACK340
FASTBACK340 Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 The Edlebrock replacement Carter AFB's are a brighter silver finish, almost polished in appearance. A Carter Thermoquad has a black plastic body. Rochesters are a similar finish as the Jet Exhaust mentioned earlier. Google carburetor images would help too.
Dragracer Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 I've seen some carbs painted using Brass metalizer.
Cato Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 I am with Cato. Testors 'Jet Exhaust'. -and a very thin black or gray wash.
Mooneyzs Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Alclad has a couple of colors that my work for the carbs as well. I think their pale gold (AL-108), Pale burnt metal (ALC-104) and Gold titanium (ALC-118) would look pretty good for a carb. I do like Cato's idea of adding a thin black wash to it
W-409 Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 I've never had that kind of great paints such as Testors' paints, so I painted my carburetors by mixing Revell's #91 Silver and Revell Gold. The result was pretty good, I know you guys could have done it better, but that's how I did and I was happy about it.
1320wayne Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Eastwood products has a carb restoration rattle can paint that is the perfect gold color for carbs.
Ryan S. Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 I like to mix Testors steel with a little gold. I just eye-ball the mix until I think it looks right.
fishdatty Posted May 17, 2012 Author Posted May 17, 2012 Thank you all for your sugestions. I will try and and see which i like best.....F.D.
