Austin T Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 (edited) I am building a replica of my mothers first truck,A 1971 Chevy fleetside.I have the kit but I am having some issues finding a color that matches her truck. The color was a 71' color and it was a bronze copper penny, sadly I don't have any pic's of it on hand.I can't really order paint online so if you know of a dupli-color can or a testors/model master/paint commonly found in a hobby shop color please tell me.I have heard of a company that matches paints colors for model car guys but can't remember the site or name of the company. this looks close to the color. http://www.google.co...27&tx=107&ty=66 http://www.google.com/imgres?start=236&um=1&hl=en&sa=X&biw=1024&bih=677&tbm=isch&tbnid=d3Du3A7Hp2wxBM:&imgrefurl=http://www.bobschevytrucks.com/1971-chevrolet-truck-color-sales-brochure.html&docid=hap_Ms-UmG2sYM&imgurl=http://www.bobschevytrucks.com/images/T/PSB71_big.jpg&w=395&h=500&ei=Yq_DT4iDGoWE8QSJ0924Cw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=784&vpy=240&dur=984&hovh=253&hovw=199&tx=130&ty=116&sig=101282864649978660081&page=16&tbnh=156&tbnw=133&ndsp=16&ved=1t:429,r:15,s:236,i:149 Edited May 28, 2012 by Austin T
BKcustoms Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 If you go to an auto parts store they might have a dupli color spray can of it, or if you have an airbrush you could go to an automotive paint store and have them mix the exact color you need.
fatkidd Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 here's what i found for 1971 Chevy & GMC Pickups... http://www.tcpglobal...ttruck-pg01.jpg at least with a paint code, you could either do as BKcustoms suggested and go to an auto body supplier or you might get lucky and find the color in a touch-up at an auto parts store. If you go with the auto body supplier, most can/will mix you an half pint (usually the smallest amount they will custom mix) and you could have them reduce it for you...at an additional fee. I would suggest having them mix it at 1:1 (some are 2:1, depending on the manufacturer), but 1:1 will be fine...it'll just take a few more coats
SSNJim Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 My local Sherwin Williams store has a sign on the window saying that they will fill any automotive color in a spray can in 5 minutes. Now how much it costs, and how many you have to buy, I don't know. The store is only open 9-5 Monday - Friday so I never got any details. Besides, I located the color I was looking for (Ford G2 Redfire Metallic) in a Duplicolor spray can before I got around to calling.
Austin T Posted May 30, 2012 Author Posted May 30, 2012 I have called all of the auto paint shops in the area and the smallest amount I can get is 1/2 pint, how big is that and how much does it usually cost?

Most auto paint is going to run between 15- 20.00 1/2 pint can or spray bomb. depending on the paint or color. Try to find a way to get the factory paint code and call and ask them. according to the info from fatkid's reference site your paint Number should be 2202, When two toned with white the paint Code was 551. Austin T Posted June 1, 2012 Author Posted June 1, 2012 Ok,I got a half pint of the color today and some thinner for it.I think it's an acrylic Enamel, should I thin it 1:1 or 1:2?
Austin T Posted June 1, 2012 Author Posted June 1, 2012 OK I thinned it 1:1 and added some copper to it and WOW it pops on the test car,Tomorrow I will spray it on the truck. Thanks for all the tips guys.
camaroman Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 Can't wait to see it!! I should be know as C-10man instead of camaroman. I've owned nearly twenty '65-'72 C-10s in the last twenty five years, as opposed to one Camaro. I still have the Camaro ('67) and a 68 C-10...
Austin T Posted June 1, 2012 Author Posted June 1, 2012 My grand father has had around the same number of those old chevy trucks,There is a picture he showed me where it has my mom's 71,my uncle's 71 and my grand father's 72 all parked next to each other.
