Bartster Posted June 22, 2012 Posted June 22, 2012 We all know about ghost flames. l have a "phantom" SS 396 project that l REALLY want to paint black to show off some P.E trim bits & badges. Problem is l can only come up with black stripes. Since it's a phantom anyway, l'm thinking it might add to the allure of it. So, has anyone seen or used "ghost stripes" successfully? Thanks, Bart.
Guest Posted June 22, 2012 Posted June 22, 2012 I've done ghost scallops, but no stripes yet. If you're painting it black,I would suggest painting your stripes with either a pearl or metallic black or spray just a pearl clearcoat over the black where you want your stripes.
Scale-Master Posted June 22, 2012 Posted June 22, 2012 Or use a different color stripe, then overcoat with a tinted clear (possibly peal) the same color as the base color: http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=50289&hl=turbine
Bartster Posted June 22, 2012 Author Posted June 22, 2012 l went with decals to avoid the masking on the pinstripes that accompany the wide SS stripes. But l do like your thinking on this. Let me wrap my brain around that for a while! Thanks.

Jantrix Posted June 22, 2012 Posted June 22, 2012 Or how about doing the stripes with just a little bit of matte clear? I've seen a few 1:1 rides done this way and they really do pop is good light.
Bartster Posted June 22, 2012 Author Posted June 22, 2012 ...then ther's carbon fiber stripes... ....That would look cool, but l'm building a phantom factory stock that Chevrolet might (should) have done in 1969. Maybe another build down the road.

So there's a chance l could pull this off with out trying!
Bartster Posted June 22, 2012 Author Posted June 22, 2012 (edited) l think that's what l'm gonna do, Jim. The paint & decals ought to be different shades. What are the odds they'd be the exact same shade & sheen of black? Edited June 22, 2012 by Bartster
Cato Posted June 22, 2012 Posted June 22, 2012 You can alter the stripe a bit with a drop or two of Dullcote...
Shardik Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 (edited) Spray the decal with a matte or semi-gloss clear before applying, then trim carefully. Edited June 23, 2012 by Shardik
