So I had this 1/24 Racing Champions 1998 promo Pontiac Grand Prix laying around which I had bought for $3 bucks or so at a flea market and I thought it was the ugliest diecast I had ever seen. Scrolling through Randy Ayers forum as well as Model Cars Magazine forum I noticed this beautiful Morgan Shepherd 1998 #1 Delco Remy America build. And thus there was my idea, let's try a custom. I took the darn thing apart, sanded the body and treated it with 2 coats of Rustoleum Ultra Cover Primer. Two days later, I shot the white gloss which was a disaster as the paint started to bubble. I found out later that the humidity and the temperature outside where the cause of that. I sanded the body once again and waited until the next day and sprayed it early in the morning. Couple of days later I placed the Decals which I bought from James Heller on the body and there it was. The decals were a bit to big but it appears according to Jim Heller that the diecast models are slightly smaller then the Monogram kits the decals were actually made for. I also painted the interior a little and added some parts to the roll cage inside. It isn't perfect but hey, you got to start somewhere.

Looks nice. The contingency decals up front could use a white backdrop, but overall you really jazzed it up nice. I think even white primer is an improvement over the original '98 get up lol. Nice save on this one!

Thanks guys. It was a lot of fun to do. Currently I have a Johnny Benson #26 Taurus snap kit on the bench that I want to transform. Any suggestions?

I think you can still ebay these decals if you fancy.

That looks like a great car to make. I also saw a picture of Matt Kenseth's Peterbilt #60. Anyone has a decent picture of that car by any chance? I already tried Google and didn't find much.

do you recall the year it was driven? if so you could try jayski.com they have a lot of nascar photos just of cars and the paint schemes they might have it.

That would be great. I did find some pics of a custom that was made on Diecastcrazy.com where I am a member as well. But I cam always use more reference pictures to make sure I have it right.
