cjstranick Posted September 19, 2012 Posted September 19, 2012 So, just starting out doing this again. And just received my kit that I bought off eBay. Used kit got it pretty cheap....now I know why haha. This will just be a progress of what I'm doing with it. Parts were already preassebled in some cases, though being shipped they either broke or I'll be changing them. Here is the kit. Parts I noticed that are missing or damaged: Glass Body ...That's it so far haven't had time to really sit down with it. Custom parts: New Suspension (Custom coils for moar low) Figure out something for replacing glass Headers and Exhaust Intake (hopefully) Gunmetal Body color Here is a picture of the body damage....how would I go about fixing this? The B and C pillars are broke off, and the roof line is missing some material. I was thinking aobut just molding some back onto it and scuplting it back together. Also the A pillar seems to have been bent, would heating it up a little and bending back into place fix this?
Intmd8r Posted September 19, 2012 Posted September 19, 2012 I'd go back afer the Ebay seller. You'd be surprised at the custoemr service of some people. Most sellers buy kits wholesle without ever opening them up and listing them accordingly. I've had two examples in the last 3 months were I bought Ebay kits that were missing or had damaged components not described in the listing. Upon contacting the seller, my purchase was refunded 100% (including shipping). I'm not saying that it always works, but you don't know until you ask. Steve
cjstranick Posted September 19, 2012 Author Posted September 19, 2012 I can see what happens. If they don't take it back how could I fix it?
Ron Hamilton Posted September 19, 2012 Posted September 19, 2012 I buy and sell a lot on Ebay. To me, that looks like a case of misrepresentation at the least, judging from the photographs. A body ruined that bad should have been photographed and disclosed. I would seek a return and a refund, and use my time on something more worthy.
Deathgoblin Posted September 19, 2012 Posted September 19, 2012 It looks like it's been chewed by critters. I'd go back to the seller first. If you're stuck with it, try to laminate a thin piece of plastic on the inside of the breaks and use plastic and putty to rebuild the damage.
Intmd8r Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 I can see what happens. If they don't take it back how could I fix it? The last time I had a seller from ebay give me a hard time about a refund, I offered to leave negative feedback and/or file a formal complaint through ebay against the seller. Most sellers use ebay as a busines and can't afford to have anything less than 100% customer satisfaction. Others simply don't care. I agree with Ronald, the damaged should have been disclosed in the listing. Unless you fee 100% comfortable with your purchase price and are good at scratchbuilding, why not try to get your money back? Maybe it's my experience in customer service or my past dealings with dishonest ebay sellers, but I hate to see good customers get ripped off. The fact that ebay does not allow for face to face transactions is no excuse for poor customer service. Just my $0.02. Either way, I wish you luck on this kit, and hope you keep us posted on the results.
martinfan5 Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 If you guys look at the first photo in this thread, you will see the body in the box with the roof and b/c pillars still intact. I am guessing when he removed the window piece, it broke the pillars and the section of the roof.
bryan_m Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 I agree that roof is so bad, i would be screamin at someone! that is my fave year BMW, please tell me youre gonna do it all black............paint, interior, and wheels.. they look so good like that. hopefully you can get a better one tho. cheers bryan
cjstranick Posted September 20, 2012 Author Posted September 20, 2012 If you guys look at the first photo in this thread, you will see the body in the box with the roof and b/c pillars still intact. I am guessing when he removed the window piece, it broke the pillars and the section of the roof. True I did pull the window off, though the roof had already cracks at that corner before doing so. The glass was barely held on. The A pillar is bent, B pillar was bent as well as broken off. C pillar was cracked when I saw it but when I took the window out, which came out easily, there was a piece of the roof that fell off. I'm sure it was a shipping problem, and not the seller. Though the item could have been packaged better, it was just inside another box. Pieces were loose and inside of it as well, which makes me think i may be missing some small pieces. I did inform the seller of how it looked when I got it, but I'm didn't ask for a refund, because I may have made it worse when I took out the window, I could have fixed it easier with it in (not what I thought at the time). It lookes eaten up because I was stripping the paint so it is smooth there now after removing paint and sanding. I think I'll try DeathGoblin's idea of molding a small bit of plastic back to it. Hell, I may even chop the roof off and just make a roadster out of it too. And @Bryan_m It will be a gunmetal color with black and brown interior.
cjstranick Posted September 20, 2012 Author Posted September 20, 2012 By the way, I'mm be stopping by Hobby Lobby today, so more progress pics later.
vwrabbit Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 I have a Testors/Fujimi version of this, I may be able to take a mold of the roof/pillars for you. Tim
3men2s Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 iT HAS HAPPEN TO ME, AND I USUALLY REPAIR IT THE BEST I CAN AND RE SELL IT, TO MAKE MY MONEY BACK PLUS A LITTLE MORE
cjstranick Posted September 20, 2012 Author Posted September 20, 2012 @vwrabbit if you could that would be awesome. if not ill do what I can with it. also I have a mk 4 jetta are you gonna be down at h20i?
vwrabbit Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 I'll try making a mold/cast it. Might be a week or 3, but shouldn't be too hard. No more dubs, but will be looking for a near mint Rabbit/GTI sometime in the coming year or 2 once I'm done w/nursing school. Want to make it to H20 sometime before I croak! :-D Tim
cjstranick Posted September 21, 2012 Author Posted September 21, 2012 I think there are people selling some rabbit/GTI down at H20. I live in DE so I'll be down in Ocean City, starting Monday, all week long. And no worries, I doubt I'll have the car done any sooner, trying to make a set of coils now to make it lower. And my paint keeps messing up on me I can't figure out why. I think my basement where I doing it is too cold. I've been working on it, painted a few parts, got some stuff put together. Forgot pictures, I'll take some later. I may be able to repair the roof, but all the pillars are bent so that when the glass sits in they bow out from the window leaving a gap.
