Any pros or cons to using Testors #2936 'Gloss Clear Coat' ENAMEL? (on top of enamel of course).

Looking for any experiences-thanks.

It is a bit yellow, and will get deeper. You can also get the "lacquer" version of it, does not yellow and will work on enamel. Thats on the label, it does work well and will not eat enamels

Thanks-that's good to know. Must be acrylic lacquer to not eat enamel-I guess?

I'm using this on a dark color and the yellowing of the enamel may not show-any experience?

Cato ,

The only color that I've ever had the enamel clear yellow on was white . Otherwise , not a problem . The only thing that I can figure is that my models are waxed on a regular basis due to show attendance and or the vending booth .

Thanks Donn. Kinda don't trust the lacquer-over-enamel thing. I can test on spoons but I'm sure I'll go with the enamel clear now.

If you use light mist coats with the laquer with the first few coats , you'll be fine . Me , I'll stick with the Testors clear top coat . I plan on giving the 1 shot wet look laquer a test run in the near future . Inquiring minds want to know ! Lol !

Enamel clearcoat can give a "warm glow" if you use it over red, orange, yellow spectrum colors that can actually be kind of attractive. It can really make 'em "pop". I've also gotten a good looking result over black. It will make lighter blues look kind of greenish and, of course, it looks yellow over white. I haven't used any enamel clear coat in years because there are so many good clear coat options now.

What are your favorite 'good clear coat options' now Manuel? -Over enamel color coats that is.

-and thanks for the tint guidelines.

The "Model Master #2017 Gloss Clear Lacquer" works fine over enamel. This car was painted with Testors bottle enamels, (the little square bottles). The silver roof is cleared with the MM lacquer. The blue has no clear. There is no noticable color change from the clear, I don't know if it will yellow over time. All of this was airbrushed. It's not as scary as you might think!

That's really hard to answer because I also haven't used enamel color coats in a long time! :D Try Model Master Ultra Gloss Clearcoat - meaning test it on your enamel first before jumping in. I think it's safe over enamel (Testors says "special formula won't craze or soften styrene" so it's mild by lacquer standards) and it lays down a super smooth, super glossy finish. I actually stuck my finger in a test coat and it didn't show when the finish dried!

Great advice-thanks. I've got lots of plastic spoons and I test everything before going to the model.
