Semi Trailer Mechanic Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 What's goin' on... Jim Looks good so far. What would really look good is if you'd put BUDD rims on it and paint the roof of the box Model Master Aluminum Metallizer.
Mack_Mechanic Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 Very nice! But being a mechanic for Ryder I guess Im alittle partial.
Southgate Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 Looking good! Nice work on that engine especially. Dan
ultraliner13 Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 Hey I like your build. Every time I have built this truck I always painted the V8 yellow for the Cat option. After seeing the engine in blue I will build my next V8 engine and make it look like the Ford Version. Cheers John Wilson
Jim B Posted September 18, 2007 Author Posted September 18, 2007 Thanks for all the comments! I appreciate it. Actually I had thought about 2-hole Budd rims, and I still might swap some in (white?). The only problem I have is removng the fromt wheels from the axle as it is cemented in place and I don't know how much force that steer axle can take. Hate to brake it, if you catch my drift! An aluminum roof on the box? Hmm, hadn't thought about that. Thought it was supposed to be either yellow or white. The current plan is to paint the sides & ends yellow, the bottom semi-gloss black, and the top either yellow or white. I'm going to trim it in matt aluminum BMF & use Testors steel on the side door hinges and all of the latches. Well, that's the plan anyway. The engine does look pretty good blue, doesn't it. I detailed it using Ken Smith's September 1991 Car Modeler article as a guide. You know, bulding the new fuel pump wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be.
Old Albion Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 James, This is looking very good. I like the steer axle and the engine. Ken Smith's detailing series are great. I use them a lot now to add just that little more interest to my trucks. Look forward to seeing the update photo's. Great Work!
mackinac359 Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 The Ryder Short Hauler has always been a favorite of mine. Looks good! Tim
Wildrice Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 Looking good. I'm getting ready to start the Louisville Hauler kit for my 1st truck.
Jim B Posted October 6, 2007 Author Posted October 6, 2007 Minor set back on the Ryder truck. It looks like it had a run-in with one of our cats. Cat - 1, Truck - 0. Minor damage, snapped off a front wheel & one side of the tie rod. Guess I can look into those two-hole Budds now!
phoneguy Posted October 7, 2007 Posted October 7, 2007 I think I would be finding another home for the cat. Jerry
Jim B Posted September 12, 2008 Author Posted September 12, 2008 (edited) Well, it's finally done! After inumerable delays, two run-ins with the cats (Cats - 2, Truck - 0), lost parts, etc.; I am proud to present my completed Ford LN8000 Short Hauler. Enjoy! Hope you liked it. Extras include: wired engine (per Ken Smith's article), Ryder decals from Model Express, Ford logo decals from (the now defunct) DMTW, 2-hole Budds from Dave @ AITM, steerable front axle, & tilting hood. Now, if I could just figure out how to change the title of this thread from "WIP" to "Complete" Edited September 13, 2008 by Jim B

gary westervelt Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 Looks great Jim. I know all to well the havoc a cat can do a model kit .My wife's cat lost several parts to my peterbilt.Mostly engine parts.I now put everthing in containers with lids in between building sessions
Old Albion Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 Jim, This is a superb looking truck. I like the wheels, engine details and the paint work. Excellent work. Thanks for sharing your build with us. Best Wishes Dave Bates
lizardlust Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 It really turned out beautifully, Jim!! That version has been a favorite of mine since it came out - I had one but the assembly was WAAYY too much for me to handle at the time. Seeing one completed and detailed so well really evokes special memories!!
