gtx6970 Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 Ok, I have a build I did many years ago using Fred Cady decals that are black lettering,,then found out some time later they should be light blue, which are now avail. I am toying with the idea to correct this. ONLY if I can remove the decals and not hurt the paint. There is no clear coat over them and I think the paint I used was laquer. So hit me with suggestions . I'm all ears.
slusher Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 Bill using masking tape will remove old decals. if the decals are in really good shape and not flaking they my not come of completly and a damp sponge and rubbing should bring the rest off. hope this helps...
Ben Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 If the tape trick doesn't work, you can try rubbing them with an eraser.
progplastic Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 The heat tape they use to witerize boats works really well for this. I have used it a couple time on some older builds. Then Like Carl said, use a damp sponge to wipe of the small bits left behind.
gtx6970 Posted February 28, 2013 Author Posted February 28, 2013 Well, good news. I jumped in with both feet to fix this car. I never would have dreamed such a simple method would work that well. But , the tape method work really well. it took 90% of the lettering off, then a good rub down with a paper towel soaked with decal solvent took the remainder off. There is some glue residue but I think once the replacement decals are in place it will look like new once again . Ordered new decals this morning. Then I can be happy with the car,,,,,only took 15 plus years.
