MikeyB08 Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 What kind of glue do you primarly use when scratch buiding? Ill be building a roll cage soon and trying to get my ducks in a row. Do you use any other techniques to ensure a good strong structure?
Blown03SVT Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 Tenax and CA with accelerator for adhesives and pinning for major structural points
MikeyB08 Posted March 13, 2013 Author Posted March 13, 2013 How do you go about "pinning"? I have small guage wire and a pin vise. Right idea?
Blown03SVT Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 (edited) Along those lines. You could go use paper clips, brass or aluminum rod, etc. I use cut down sewing pins which I cut with diagonal pliers. The sewing pins are really cheap and really strong, almost as if they have a "temper" to them. The key is to what ever you use to have it fit snug in the drilled hole. Edit: found a tutorial for you http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=61639&hl=pinning Edited March 13, 2013 by Blown03SVT
Mooneyzs Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 I use Weld-On #3 which is like tenax and pro ambroid as well as CA with accelerator.
Blown03SVT Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 Thanks Roger. I didn't know it wasn't available anymore. I have had a bottle on my work bench for years which thankfully hasn't evaporated that much. I never seems to need a ton of it so a little has always gone a long way. Did the manufacture go out of buisness or was it because of VOC reasons?
Jantrix Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 Tenax and CA with accelerator for adhesives and pinning for major structural points yep
Ace-Garageguy Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 (edited) Tenax and CA with accelerator for adhesives and pinning for major structural points Yeah, one of the deep-penetrating liquid glues (Chris' Weld-On #3 is great, a lot more of the same stuff, more cost-effective overall than buying little bottles), pinning, fish-mouthing the styrene rod (as also suggested), and I personally prefer Loctite Gel CA for fillets and reinforcement at roll-cage joints. The rest of this cage was scratch-built. Edited March 13, 2013 by Ace-Garageguy
Mooneyzs Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 As Bill mentioned, it is much more cost effective buying in a bigger quantity. Years ago Weld-On #3 was able to be purcased in 4oz bottkes in hobbies stores....well thats where i first got mine. At some point in time you stopped seeing it in hobby stores. I really love this glue so I had to find other sources for it. The last time I ordered ir I got it from a company out in Placerville Ca which is 45 miles from Sacramento. Here is the website if anyone is interested www.thefabricatorssource.com i just got on their website to check prices and a quart (32 oz) is $16.40 which equals .51 cents an ounce. A pint (16 oz) is $10.50 which equals .65 cents an ounce and they even have 4 oz bottles for $5.70 which equals $1.43 an ounce. I bought two quarts last time because of the min order and I jist transfer from the quart container to a smaller jar.
MikeyB08 Posted March 13, 2013 Author Posted March 13, 2013 Awesome!! Thanks a lot guys. Really a lot of useful information.

Mooneyzs Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 i agree..thanks for the web site..that is a big save on cost.. You are welcome. I had a plastics shop here in phoenix that I got a pint from years ago and they went out of business so i had to find somewhere else and found that company online and couldn't beat the price. Gkad I coukd pass on the info.
Ace-Garageguy Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 Do they stick you with a hazmat shipping fee? I can get it from a local plastics supplies company, but they add almost as much to ship a quart as it costs & I'm about out.
MikeyB08 Posted March 13, 2013 Author Posted March 13, 2013 They definitely have the best price. Any ideas about how long this Weld-On #3 last? I know it depends on how much you scratch build. Just general use.

Just general use. Kinda depends on how much you build. I've gone thru a 1 oz bottle of Tenax in a week...even keeping it capped most of the time.
Mooneyzs Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 (edited) Bill... No they didn't hit me with a hazmat shipping fee. I found my invoice when I last bought from them and it was back on 8/3/2011. They have a $25.00 min order. And back then the quarts were $13.20 ea, so I ordered 2 to make the min order price. So total was $26.50 and shipping and handling was $13.83 for a total of $40.30. James....as I mentioned the last time I order was on 8/3/2011 and I opened one of the quarts on 8/23/2011 and I have about 1/2 a quart left from that can now plus my 2nd can I haven't even opened yet. So a year and half on basically a pint that has been used. And as you said depends on how much you use. I use this to glue all of my bare plastic....scratch building or parts from a kit. I always pour into a smaller bottle which I will have open when using. Sometimes I use a brush and sometimes I use a flexifile touch n flow applicator. Edited March 14, 2013 by Mooneyzs
MikeyB08 Posted March 14, 2013 Author Posted March 14, 2013 Okay Awesome. Regardless, seems like a wise investment. Thanks again for all the responses.
