crazyrichard Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 (edited) after spending all my time on the garage dio for the last few weeks i know felt like starting a car build again .... i bought a bunch of kits from a guy and this heller kit was in there , simple kit and already got some work done to it but this was the perfect base to use for a custom project .. not 100% sure what it will be its one of my we will start and see where we end up builds i had a bunch of 32 ford fenders , could use them for this build cut one rear ford wing in half to see .... the original fenders where to narrow desided to remove the stock rear fenders thats the start so far Edited March 27, 2013 by crazyrichard
jeffs396 Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Very cool...I've had my eye on this kit for much the same reason, we'll be watching
crazyrichard Posted March 27, 2013 Author Posted March 27, 2013 thnx well just went on and placed the 1932 ford rear fenders in a kind of different way , thought it looked cool because the 1932 front fenders where to recogniseble as ford fenders i used the kit fenders ... first rod ever i build with fenders on haha used the ford running boards , they where way to wide and also to short , because i build all my fords fenderless i had more then one set left . so i narrowed them and used a second runningboard to make them longer then decides to change the shape of the wells more like on a ford fender thats it so far
tooltas Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 a nice small block ford or gm v8 would be cool in that long hood
crazyjim Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 The rear fender looks excellent, but they have a lip on the outside edge while the front fenders are lipless. You may want to consider sanding the rear fender lip off - or add a lip to the front fender. Just my opinion.
crazyrichard Posted March 27, 2013 Author Posted March 27, 2013 thnx guys engine wise it will be boring everything stays closed and i'm building this one a bit faster then usual.. something difefrent from building for like 3-4 weeks straight .. want to use this as shop truck in my dio ..so its a quicky and citrus you where one step ahead lol i build reletivly fast but not that fast heheheh here are the lips removed went to do that after the previous update the grille sanded the chrome off didnt feel like de-chroming removed the inside dryfit placed a rod in the center then made a v8 logo , the 8 is made from 2 0's of a 300sl badge from a 1/18 car , i'm nor really plesed with de v yet i tried some stainless mesh but i only had rougher and thick stuff left that didnt want to play so i put in the grille i cut out in 2 sections that will be black so will look more mesh then went with new front fender lines from the grille towards the sides so now they run round from the grille dryfit , not fond of the wheels its a bit to sweet , now its never ment as a bad as extreme rod , just a nice looking custom shop rod but maybe some deeper wheels will look better made a visor , glues 2 bumpers from the partsbox on top of eitch other and sanded a shape in them , the middle has a sticking out v shape with an edge and that runs into smooth sides
Tom Geiger Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Very neat project! I've been looking to get this kit but Hellers are hard to find in the US. I don't know if I'd modify it or build it stock, I guess I'd need to see the kit to decide. This truck may be cool with a late model Mercedes engine from a Tamiya kit. I'll be watching!
crazyrichard Posted March 27, 2013 Author Posted March 27, 2013 thnx guys .. well my primer nozzle was clogged up and even a needle would not open it .. i sanded it good and degreased it and sprayed it old green (thats what the color was called) .. some seems are a tad light as to be expected with no primer .. but that will all be good .....never sprayed without primer but in this case it doesnt matter what happens more about that later on the grille is changed got rid of the silver inserts and placed 2 aditional vertical pillars
bpletcher55 Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 RICHARD ,I LIKE WHERE THIS IS GOING, NOT SURE I LIKE THE REAR FENDERS BUT I,M GOING TO WAIT AND SEE HOW IT COMES OUT ,NICE WORK!
crazyrichard Posted March 27, 2013 Author Posted March 27, 2013 RICHARD ,I LIKE WHERE THIS IS GOING, NOT SURE I LIKE THE REAR FENDERS BUT I,M GOING TO WAIT AND SEE HOW IT COMES OUT ,NICE WORK! thnx and well tbh looking at it now i wish i just had done them running through more normal .... but well i went like this now .. i dont dislike it but its turning out quite vintage looking and teh fenders dont really match that way now in the rear still a quick build so > i wanted a rougher paintjob a bit like in the old days ad maybe do some mild rust in corners of lets say a door or fender .. but it turned out smooth as glass actually so ..... with different light > its really green this shows the finish good and its hardened already its baked on the radiator with the heat turned high .. its paint with gloss already in it , i want to make shop decals / logos and also do those in teh garage dio. but i dont have a printer atm ..so when i can make them i can put them on and i can add a layer of clear later some panellines are still a tad white , no wonder without primer but no worry those will become black still thinking of doing a tiny tiny bit of rust , not much and maybe like barely noticable like where the hinges are or in a small corner
ryanm Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 Cant wait to see it finished your builds are some of my favorites
crazyrichard Posted March 28, 2013 Author Posted March 28, 2013 well it was dry and the paint hard so i started adding some very mild rust , imo it looks great on that green gloss / reflection is really strong ..no clear coat just the paint did the rest in a base layer of matt black started to weather the undercarridge , will add some structure later on and some silver details .. and some more tones dryfit with the interiour and made the panellines black steering wheel will get some chrome on it
crazyrichard Posted March 28, 2013 Author Posted March 28, 2013 and a bonus in the garage , loved teh reflection of the windows on the paint
Platerpants Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 nice that bit of complaining you did on the no primer, I haven't used primer on all my builds except 2 and one i stripped it off and painted on the plastic. so technically only 1 primered model it was black plastic and i wanted the thing green so here it is. again nice build so far.
Platerpants Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 oh and nice rust detail, im thinking one of my builds is due for rust, any ideas or tutorials on getting started with rust?
crazyrichard Posted March 28, 2013 Author Posted March 28, 2013 thnx guys ... and rust well depending on the effect i use some styrene sand dust , so sand some styrene and talke the fine dust then i paint a base layer of brown rusty looking enamel paint and sprinkle the dust on it , spreading it with a brush then after drying some drybrushing with a slight black and maybe go over it with a cloth.. last is a acrylic paint thats really bright rust color and i just drybrush that .. its just a case of trying out some stuff... but now that you mention rust man...... i had a slight accident when fitting the interiour and udercarridge , to avoid fingerprints i held it with a cloth .. and i had to press real hard to keep the contact / glue spots in place due to some minour deforming .. then the bonnet had some inprint of the cloth .. if i would have kept it like that nobody would notice on pics .. i had to polish it and then the difference was to big and i could not rub it out .., so did the bonnet and rear door rusted .. here i will start slow so you guys would go like right away bit clearer then hated it , the contrast of the high reflective paint and rusted parts looked to forced and on purpose so i did what was my pla in the beginning.. just a base to start , some ereas need to have the rust spec efefct toned down so sorry for the gloss lovers .. i never did the hairspray technique .. maybe i try it on this one and hit it with some color and make it look chipped ??
crazyrichard Posted March 28, 2013 Author Posted March 28, 2013 well nothing to do then continue this theme of rust then seriously the grainy effect of the rust seems rougher on pics then irl .. irl it looks much smoother used the mercedes headlights from the kit , painted them chrome and weathered them hand painted white walls , still wet here need more work after drying washed the deep part of the rims with black added a red edge , outer edge is chrome .. need more wathering after drying made the window frame rusted and placed it safari style just have to make the best of this kit now after the set back
Tom Geiger Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 Ha! We all wind up back at our rusty roots! Looks great in the last pictures! My kind of truck.
crazyrichard Posted March 29, 2013 Author Posted March 29, 2013 thnx guys and well when all fails turn to rust .. that was actually my plan in the beginning but i ended up making it gloss .. and well i think the car just didnt agree ... today all the layers where dry and more matte , now i can see where i need to tone down the rust structure and maybe think about some slight colors .... the wheels will be redone looked terrible
crazyrichard Posted March 29, 2013 Author Posted March 29, 2013 well did some more work ... placed the headlight lenses and in the seem flowed some brown thin paint , the lenses themself got a mist of some yellow acrylic , now thats rubbed off and it just tones down the lenses but doenst look yellow cut a side window so its smaller and placed it rolled down a bit used one of the kit decals to see how a logo would look , actually looked nice buts its already off the car then modified some steelies ...not sure what color to paint them went for 4 of the same tyres and painted white walls on the other 2
