Fabrux Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Sounds like it would be fun, however I think you'd run into an issue with painting. Unless, of course, there are paint booths set up or something. Maybe part of the weekend's events would be to build a kit start to finish over the 3 days? Sort of like an extended 24 Hours of LeMans build.
Tom Geiger Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 We do have that in our hobby, it's called GSL in Salt Lake City. It's 4 days of talks, model display and contest, museum tours and a small swap meet. It's only attended by a few hundred people, but influential people in our hobby. The ladies craft market is much bigger than our hobby. Consider that chains like Michaels and AC Moore have huge stores coast to coast to service this market. A show like this is professionally run and no doubt turns a good profit. If we had that potential, someone would be all over it! To start something like that from scratch would be an investment of over $50k, with no guarantees of even breaking even for years. NNL East has talked about doing a Friday of seminars. We just hadn't had the steam to get it started. Lord knows we have the talent coming to do a kick ass program!
johnbuzzed Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 The MASSCAR event in March is somewhat similar in that there is usually a get-together (albeit informal) in the hotel lounge on Saturday afternoon, then a buffet banquet with entertainment such as guest speakers, blind modeler competitions, live bands, etc, on Saturday night; the festivities sometimes continued in the hotel lounge. The contest is on Sunday and there are seminars during the day; sometimes an auction, too, and lunch in the hotel lounge. It was a two- or three-day mini vacation and I always looked forward to attending.
jeffs396 Posted April 20, 2013 Author Posted April 20, 2013 Good stuff so far, keep the ideas/opinions coming
zenrat Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 How about these ideas for workshops. Clearing over racecar decals - 6 hours of "discussion" terminating in a cage fight. 101 uses for an AMT Firestone skinny. 101 uses for a Revell 5.0 Ford. Address your phobia - how to ship kits to Australia (open to US e-bay sellers only). That's not a muscle car - No discussion, straight to the fight. There could also be a demonstration element where representatives from Revell and AMT demonstrate with a 1:1 engine how the fan belt can be made to support an alternator without any visible bracketry.
Danny Lectro Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 (edited) The idea sounds like Wonderfest, which is specific to sci-fi and fantasy modelling. Along with the contest, dealers room and industry guests, they have all-day hands-on seminars on Friday, with half-hour seminars on Saturday and Sunday. The organizers of Wonderfest go through a lot to get things together every year. A similar set-up for car modelling might have a bigger built-in audience available than sci-fi and fantasy, but it definitely would not be easy to organize. Edited April 20, 2013 by Danny Lectro
