FIREMODELMAN Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 Really nice project Bob. If I may offer up a tip or two. How did you plan on going about the huge curve on the cab? I've had good luck in the past on some of my fire truck model's using automotive Bondo for my curve's. I'd start wth some thin styrene sheet, .030 or so, get the base shape, then fill in with the Bondo. It sand's easy and take's curve shapes very well. I would often do 3 to 4 thin coats, sanding and shaping between each layer. Just go alittle easy on the cream hardner, it makes it very hard to sand if you use to much.
dptydawg Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 Bob, quite a few years back Old autos magaxine did an extensive article on the restoration of the LaBatt's truck. I don't know if they have an archive section and I don't know when it was published, but it might be worthwhile checking with them for reference material. You can fine them at http://www.oldautos.ca/ You are progressing quite nicely with this project. Carl

dptydawg Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 (edited) Hi Bob I'm sure that you have checked out this site as part of your references but others might be interested in just what the Smith brothers turned out. http://www.coachbuilt.com/bui/s/smith/smith.htm I was talking with an old time Labatt's driver on the weekend and he said that at one tiime they had a Smith brothers custom wrecker that had the streamliner cab, but it was sold reather than restored. You are making great progress on your tractor. Good work on the engine. Carl Edited May 27, 2013 by dptydawg

truckabilly Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 You are doing a great job on this one. Some day I hope to make my own engine out of some scrap plastic too.
raildogg Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 (edited) I looked at thy smith web site and the line drawings caught my eye. Does anyone think the drawing of the cab is too short compared to the other images? I think it needs to be longer to accommodate the fifth wheel apparatus?. On a side note. I think I once stumbled onto a drawing made by a Russian designer that looked similar but was done in the 1920's. I have looked for it but could not find it. It was of a three wheeled automobile though. Strange small world. Has anyone else seen that other drawing in their web images browsing?? Do not think ,I think anything other than random coincidence Edited June 5, 2013 by raildogg

b_lever1 Posted June 23, 2013 Author Posted June 23, 2013 Heah it has been a few weeks. Life has to get in the way sometimes got some stuff done, figuring out the ride height, got oil pan made,Still think about added head bolt details, bell housing started, made up the front engine mount.Still thinking about rear bell housing mounts. I've also got started on my leaf springs making those from brass, had fun figuring out how to make spring eyes incase no one has worked with this stuff you have to heat it so it will form the way you want,I just use my bic lighter, heat the brass, let it cool for a moment, clean the black off, then shape it,Iuse brass tube to shape it.I think it's called annealing?????,don't know the fancy name for it.Now have to make spring bushings
