Ace-Garageguy Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 (edited) To the best of my knowledge, Monogram's first plastic kit was the 1954 yellow acetate release of the Midget, in about 1/20 scale (which makes it a good basis for full-size early champ cars in 1:24 / 1:25 scales). Subsequent releases were red acetate, and that's what the built-up shown below is (judging from the way it's warped and the gloss, which is very different in appearance from the styrene releases I have) and then later, red styrene. Over the years I've collected a bunch of these for very little money, mostly as gluebomb parts-sources for track-noses, and for vintage champ car builds. Recently I got a red acetate built-up model, very nicely done (for only $5), but missing a few parts and beginning to warp. The plan is to restore this little car with as few later parts as possible, to look as it did when it was built in the mid '50s. I'm pretty sure the acetate version isn't any newer than '56, as I have a mint boxed styrene version dated 1956 (the box on the right). Any additional information or corrections appreciated.
