Monty Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 (edited) I'm trying to find good pictures of these Firestone SS Radials. They were made in the late '70s & early '80s & are completely different from any current Firestone tire. Unfortunately, Google didn't have much to offer (there was a picture of the outline letter version of these tires, but I'm not looking for those). As the title says, I need a straight-on shot, as opposed to an angled shot like this. TIA for all helpful replies. Edited July 26, 2013 by Monty
zenrat Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 Because you want the tread pattern? If you crop the tread from the picture you have and then stretch the cropped picture in the vertical axis you will come close to what you need. You'll have to guess how much to stretch it but i'd say probably double the height might be about right.
Monty Posted July 29, 2013 Author Posted July 29, 2013 (edited) Because you want the tread pattern? I guess I should've said that I need a straight-on picture of the sidewall. One of our members, Chief Joseph, just came out with a number of sidewall decals representing various RWL tires from Goodyear, Goodrich, Firestone, Cooper etc. in both 1/24 & 1/25. He didn't happen to have these specific Firestones, but said if I could get him a good straight-on picture of the tire & lettering, he could make them available for the same price as all the others. Obtaining these would help me build more accurate versions of two cars from my early gearhead days. Edited July 29, 2013 by Monty
zenrat Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 OK. But the same stretching trick would work with the pic of the sidewall. Crop and stretch in the vertical axis until it is circular. You'll get some distortion but the result should be good enough to enable someone to identify a font or to draw up the decal. Like this

I assume you were able to do this via some photo manipulation software? I've had no luck finding pics that would make it easy for Joseph to use, so I may see if he can work with what you've done here. Thanks!
Guest Johnny Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 I spent about two and half hours total going back and looking for a straight on picture of those tires and came up with nothing. You would think there would be one out there somewhere!

I cropped the pic with Apple's Preview (cropping isn't strictly necessary but it makes for a better result) saved it and then inserted it into Micro$oft Powerpoint. I then just dragged the top of the pic up (and the bottom down) until the writing looked circular. I then drew a circle with the draw commands to check the circularity. Selected both the stretched pic and the circle, grouped them and then saved the resulting image (not the presentation) as a Jpeg. Et Voila. Robert is your mothers brother. I didn't want it to be said that I didn't do my own due diligence before asking for the board's help, but yeah, I'm very surprised at how few pictures of the 1:1 tires exist. I appreciate the help, 'cuz I can't wait to get a set of these on a model.
Casey Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Monty, have you seen these 1/25(?) scale Firestone S/S Radial tires?
Edsel-Dan Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 I have a few of those. VERY Soft Rubber. They were in Revell kits like the Skips issue 57 Chevy Nomad, and the Many VW Vanagon versions!!

RodneyBad Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 (edited) I think those tires also came in the Revell 80s Camaro I have a set somewhere. Not bad looking tires, Just haven't found a spot for them yet. and this one Edited October 3, 2013 by RodneyBad
Edsel-Dan Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 I think the first kit I found them in was the "Travolta Firebird" Not the best Firebird/Trans Am with those IMSA fenders & whale-tail spoiler!! Too bad the body was molded with those IMSA extensions in place!!
