jamie Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 Hey guys... Here's one of the two projects I'm working on at the moment. This is going to be a Christmas gift for my mom this year. She bought a 1972 VW brand new and STILL HAS IT. She drives it every day!! It's the only car she ever had so I figured it'd be cool to build one for her this year. Here's the box: Most of the work I've done so far is cleaning up the HORRENDOUS flash that is on this kit. Unbelievable. I have to give a huge thank you to VW Dave for giving me great ideas and sending me some much needed parts, like door panels and seat belts. YOU DA MAN! OK, so I got the wheels painted, I have to add the hubcaps. Here's a 3/4 rear shot, you can see I have A LOT of cleaning up to do still. I've also sanded off the wheel flares that Revell put on the fenders. Why did they add them? I have no clue. And here's a front shot: I'm going to be detailing the engine with the engine lid open. I've drilled out the kit distributer to accept wires, and some other odd and end doo-hickies are planned in the engine compartment. I've sanded off the big square that is supposed to be a sunroof (!) and I'm just trying to get the body smooth. A lot of work, but I'm digging it. I'll be primering it with Tamiya and shooting the body color with Model Master Lacquer Phoenician Yellow....interior will be black. Hope you guys like it. I'll try and update as much as possible.....
Luis Ayala Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 I really admire your patience, I bought two of those kits about 3 years ago and I know what you are talking about... I did started one but got tired of cleaning parts and put it aside. I know your mom will love it... Keep us posted!!!!!!!!!
VW Dave Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 Great job so far, Jamie; I agree that she's sure to love it, and I'm looking forward to seeing more progress.
GeeBee Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 I Love beetles, so i can't wait to see how this one turns out, i have the convertible kit, which has been in the loft for a few years, i keep having a look at it, but there's more flash that parts, you got to have patience to get this kit to look good, but the body's already looking good. Geoff
Brent Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 I can never get enough of these little cars. Please do keep us posted as you go along.
dub Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Looks like you're getting 'er in shape pretty well. Thanks for the mention about the kit's shortcomings. I know to steer clear of it unless I need intense therapy! That is certainly a great gift to give a three dimensional work of art. She'll love it! I have a few on my list to eventually do. (gift cars, that is...)
VW Dave Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 (edited) 'Gift' models are always a hit, especially if the recipient loves their car....and I've found that if it's a complete surprise it's an even cooler gift. I may be in over my head, but I've got 3 going at present(2 of them actually stand a good chance of making the deadline ). Edited November 14, 2007 by VW Dave
