cobraman Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 You may have seen my current build in the "on workbench " section. I am dealing with a kit with plastic tires and clear wheel discs to simulate wire wheels. I want to keep this build box stock but I am not sure how to deal with these clear discs. It has been recomended to try and lace up something myself or a photo etched item or source something better from another kit. All good ideas and I may look into something along those lines but was wondering if these things can be improved upon with some detailing of some sort. Any ideas short of replacing them ? Thanks guys.
randx0 Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 If I were going to use those wheels I'd probably try dry brushing some "silver or chrome" paint over the spokes depending on how that looks maybe follow up with a black wash to further highlight the spokes and rim. unless the real car has painted spokes then use whatever color they were painted for dry brushing. Dry brushing is accomplished by using very little paint on your brush and just lightly going over the raised areas with very little pressure applied. Hope this is helpful.
Ramfins59 Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 If you're really adventurous Ray, you could try putting BMF on those spokes. It would probably take awhile to do and also be a frustrating and time consuming as all heck, but it could work.
cobraman Posted November 6, 2013 Author Posted November 6, 2013 Thanks guys. Rich, I thought about BMF and I may give it a try. I think I may be chasing my tail and there may be no hope of getting these to look anything but bad. There are some beautiful aftermarket wire wheels out there but I just can't see myself paying the asking price for what I found. 65 bucks or so with shipping ???? Six time s the cost of the kit ??? I don't think so.
Tom Geiger Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 Silver Sharpie pen! Just grab the high part of the spokes with the silver tip. If any gets on the clear part, just wait until it dries and it pretty much rubs away with a toothpick. I did that on a 1/25 scale bicycle.
cobraman Posted November 6, 2013 Author Posted November 6, 2013 Thanks Tom I will give that a try. The BMF did not work out well.
cobraman Posted November 7, 2013 Author Posted November 7, 2013 And the answer is.......................... NO ! These can not be made to look presentable. At least not by me. Will be ordering a PE set.
