LDO Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 It was a land speed racer being tested, minus skin, on the dragstrip. Its name was "Motion 1", but nicknamed "Rhinoceros" when the body panels were on, because the humps to clear the engines. It was owned by Neal Black. In 1970, it crashed at almost 400mph, killing its driver. http://www.nhra.com/blog/dragster-insider/2008/12/18/34443/
FASTBACK340 Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 I saw that dragster YEARS ago on a site and always thought what a great replica build it would make. Thanks for the additional info as what I had seen was just a sub-title with the pic.
disabled modeler Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 Second photo...Mickey Thompsons car?....looks like it has two Buick nailhead engines.
comp1839 Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 why does it look like the front motor isn't running?
Greg Myers Posted November 9, 2013 Author Posted November 9, 2013 Second photo...Mickey Thompsons car?....looks like it has two Buick nailhead engines. You're on the right track, two Nailheads, but not M/T.
Harry P. Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 If two is better than one, is four better then two?

Greg Myers Posted November 11, 2013 Author Posted November 11, 2013 yes that's where I was going next. and this ?
Ace-Garageguy Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 ... and this ? What looks like a Pontiac valve cover peeking out of all the smoke, and the mounting of the fuel tanks (similar to the Challenger I) makes it most likely Mickey Thompson's "Monster".
Ace-Garageguy Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 (edited) Here's an early one for ya'...hint: it became the first dragster to break 150mph in the quarter. Edited November 11, 2013 by Ace-Garageguy
