What would be the point since Revell already has a stock '48 convertible kit.

Check out Tim Boyd's 48 Ford Gasser build for the "other magazine". He did exactly that. It's an online-exclusive article, I won't post a link since they're the competition...

Yup, custom only. Chopped top, shaved trim. You would need the convertible version with a top from the Testor's IMC version. There was quite a bit of info on the kit here on the forum when it was released - probably a search would give you a bunch of info.
