The Moparian Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 While searching for my next project, I came across the Revell '03 Wrangler. I liked the detail, I liked the style, but couldn't understand why they'd do everything so well and just seal the hood shut. So I set out to fix it. I started by cutting the hood out. Then I cut the "engine" out of the bottom. Next I had to decide what drivetrain to put in in. Well if it was me, I would use a modern HEMI. So that's exactly what I did. I picked up the Revell '09 Challenger and plucked the motor/trans out. Enough talk, here's some pictures of where I'm at right now. Here's where the fun starts. I found out a friend who owns a hobby shop carries styrene in all it's glorious forms. So I picked up a few packages and began my descent into scratch-building. I've always liked the cool ways guys show their spare tires. So i made my own spare tire rack on the roll bar And lastly, the springs that came with it looked too flimsy and weak. So I found some paperclips and this is what we have I'll update as I get more progress done on it. All suggestions and criticism welcome. Thanks
hjracing Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 Really nice project! I'll keep an eye on this one!
The Moparian Posted January 5, 2014 Author Posted January 5, 2014 Well today I got a little work done on the jeep. Got the motor about set in the engine bay. Talk about a TIGHT squeeze I also didn't like that the rear bumper was stock when the front was so heavily modified and it has rock sliders. So I modified the rear bumper and cut sheet styrene to give it a clean look.
RodneyBad Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Well today I got a little work done on the jeep. Got the motor about set in the engine bay. Talk about a TIGHT squeeze WOOF! that is a tight fit.. 1/24 engine? For a Rock Crawler, that bumper is gonna hang up on a lot of rocks.. Less is more.. High and tight they like to be..
The Moparian Posted January 5, 2014 Author Posted January 5, 2014 1/25 from the Challenger SRT8 kit. But the bumper only hangs low like that to cover the gas tank. I had it designed to not go as low originally and I didn't like the look of it.
Chuck Most Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Had the same idea and I like how yours is going. Just FYI- the reason the hood is sealed is because this is a plastic version of the diecast Tomb Raider Jeep from 2004 or so.
The Moparian Posted January 5, 2014 Author Posted January 5, 2014 I guess that would make sense then lol. I guess I liked it better this way anyway cause it gave me something to do. Taking a break today for football. I'll get some more progress during the week
slusher Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 Very cool project. Love the engine and spare mount..
The Moparian Posted January 8, 2014 Author Posted January 8, 2014 Quick update. I laid "paint" yesterday and here's a quick mock up. I actually used Plasti-dip which is like a spray on latex. I wanted to try something different and this was the result. I like it. The matte finish gives it a good off road look.
hjracing Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 I really like the look of your "paint" job, this product finish is awesome! Really good idea!
The Moparian Posted January 8, 2014 Author Posted January 8, 2014 Thanks. I use the stuff all the time and wanted to do something different on this project. I was skeptical at first about how it would look but i really like the end result.
Platerpants Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Im no chrysler guy but i think my dad and brother might just drool on this if it were real. good start.
ratchetman87 Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Nice looking good. I like the spare tire rack. Nice touch
The Moparian Posted January 19, 2014 Author Posted January 19, 2014 On the home stretch now. Got the motor placed in. Interior all set minus the dash decal. Rear tire carrier all done.
the goon Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 I can't wait to see this Jeep completed! X2. Lookin' good. Mark
blackandwhite Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 (edited) I'm building the exact same kit. I wanted to open it up but didn't want to take on that task. The spare tire carrier is awesome. Where did you pick up the extra tire from? I had to scratch build the rear half of my transfer case. For some reason it just wasn't in the kit Edited January 24, 2014 by blackandwhite
The Moparian Posted January 24, 2014 Author Posted January 24, 2014 I actually got the tire for another project. It's not the same size as the jeep ones but you can't tell with it on the back. The wheel was just a random spare I had and I drilled out the center.
blackandwhite Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 Did you have fitment issues with the interior side panels? I've got my seats in and now the panels aren't wanting to line up
