foxbat426 Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 Hi, I have never used duplicolor car paints on a model before and have decided to try it on my next build. My questions are can you spray this stuff right out of the can? and second, do I need to lay down primer before using? I use enamel paints mostly out of the can and airbrush and most of the time don't prime and they come out fine - just wondering if its the same with duplicolor. thanks john
Jim B Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 I use Dupli-Color a lot, and I spray it right out of the can. Since I don't own an airbrush, I've never tried to decant it to use in an airbrush. As for primer, I use either the gray, white, or red Dupli-Color primer depending on what I am painting.
High octane Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 I've used Dupli-Color paints successfully over Dupli-Color, Tamiya, and Testors primers. I usually use a white primer as they grey primers seem to change the colors I'm spraying making them darker. I only use the grey primer if my color coats are to be silver or black. I do all my painting out of "rattle cans."
Erik Smith Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 Yes, they spray very well out of the can. Yes, you need primer. You will also need to clear as most don't finish out in a high gloss. Their clear works well. Duplicolor will ghost - so proper prep is paramount. The new Revell plastic seems worse than others...
PappyD340 Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 I use Duplicolor products all the time their primers are the only primer I do use,( I never paint without priming first ) have never had a problem with their products, I do put the can in a container of hot tap water and warm it before spaying, makes the paint flow better. Like Eric said your end result is only as good as the prep underneth, hope this helps!!

Good idea warming the paint - especially the non-metallic/pearl varieties (I have had some solid colors "splat" if not warmed). BTW, their pearl colors are great as the flakes don't appear so out of scale (vs traditional metallic paints).
