I'm contemplating building some motors, but could use some help with where to start. Some of you seem to be pretty knowledgable about the heritage of the various motors, how they we're de-stroked, bored out, cylinders added / removed, sold to another manufacturer etc to create a different motor.

What I'm hoping to build is the following

GMC 305/351 cid V6 as used in GMC pickups and heavy trucks in the 60's. I'm hoping I can start with an existing kit motor and modify the block, maybe one of the GM big block engines?

Ford 300 cid I-6 as used in lots of pickups and heavy trucks in the 60's

Ford 361HD as used in Ford F and C series trucks (I think this was a de-stroked 390 cid Ford engine)

Ford 391HD as used in Ford F and C series trucks (de-stroked 428?)

Dodge Cummins turbo diesel

Ford Powerstroke, would the 7.3L block from the Ford Dually work as a start or is it a completely different motor?

Biggest problem I see with the Ford I-6 and Cummins is finding a big enough I6 to start with, the Chevy I6's I know of are all quite a bit smaller displacement than the 300 and way to small for the 360-400 cid of the Cummins.

Try this linky. The V6 GMC engine seems to be a motor all it's own. The valve covers resemble the old 348/409 Chevy engines but that is all. I know that earlier in the 50s, GMC used Pontiac V8 engines.

I've been to that GMC site, its a great resource for old GMC trucks.

I was thinking the 348 out of the '59 El Camino might be a good start since it is the same time period. Isn't there a 409 in one of the Impala kits?

I know there is a 390 in the '70 Ford police car, is there a better source for that motor? I've heard its not the best example of it.

Seems like no luck on a big I-6 though, plenty of examples of the Chevy 6 though.

This link should help with the Ford V8 family. Look at the '62 T-Bird kit for a decent 390, even the '58 Edsel and '60 Starliner are very good. Ford trucks had another variation on the 390 that was made for truck rentals only in the late '60s. I forget what it was but some odd cubic inch number maybe a 330.

Some of the Ford truck engines like the 391 didn't share the passenger car blocks, they were new castings made specifically for heavy duty larger Fords.

This should answer all your Ford 6-banger questions. Unlike the Chevy 6, a lot of Ford parts didn't swap back and forth and had totally different blocks as well as other parts. I never saw a Ford 300 in a passenger car, but it was similar to the 240 outwardly at least.

Some Ford help here. Having played with FE's and 6bangers for nearly 30years here it goes

The 330, 361 and 391 truck engines are externally the same as any FE except for bigger crankshaft snouts to be used for

heavy duty pulleys for compressors and such. But whatever engine one you use should be fine as this wouldn't be that noticable in scale.

The 6 bangers were the 240cid and the 300cid which were identical externally, and the 300 saw production all the

way thru 1996!
