Funny you bring that up. I heard somewhere that 80% of all pictures taken today were taken with a cell phone. And if that ain't enough , most cell phones are of a greater quality than most cameras, more pixels as well.

Correct. My wifes phone is 8 megapixels and has a macro function. Why would I even bother with a regular camera?

Lens. Before pixel resolution was even a blip on the radar, photo hardware was all about the lens quality. That's what you spent the money on and you put a cap on it to protect it. Lenses the size of a piece of confetti pulled out of a grubby pocket or purse to grab a snap to me doesn't represent a concerted effort to take good pictures.

Nothing personal Rob, it's just the bain of my existence as a graphic artist being handed cell phone snaps from clients who then expect to see glossy, rich, studio quality images on their ads because it looked okay on their 2x3 phone screen. I think lens consideration is still valid in a digital world, even if it's nothing fancy.

I always fix my photos up in a photo editing program of some kind... While PhotoShop is often too complicated and expensive for most people, myself included, I can always recommend PhotoScape , a free and very user friendly online photo editor, with which one can fix focus and sharpness of photos to a certain extent in just a few clicks ;)

Here's a link, give it a go...

Thanks for all the help. I think this is probably the best I am going to get. This is in marco, about 8 inches in full Sun. If I try to zoom in it goes out of focus. I will just have to do my engine shots this way until I get a new camera. I love the close-ups some of you guys get!

Ron, that photo is fine. No problems at all. See... you can do it!

Thanks Harry and to everyone else a sincere thanks also.

Auto macro is a good thing!

...except when it isn't. I have a Nikon One J1 and I find myself fighting with the auto macro setting a lot. I have to be really careful with it because I have to physically move the lens in and out to zoom; this affects the macro setting greatly. I have to sit and play with it to figure out the ISO settings better, though.

There's no manual override?
