My first brush with my own mortality was in my mid 40s when I tried to read the date on a Mercury dime. So I got glasses and it's been downhill ever since!

Life has been rushing by and I don't even notice how fast the years go! All I can remember is my grandfather at 88 telling me, "It all went so fast. Last thing I knew I was 18. And I still feel 18 inside."

scary how fast it goes. I remember when the work week dragged...... now I have what seems to be a million of them under my belt.

I look back how fast it has went by since my 18th birthday...so many good memories

I have had too many brushes with mortality....bad car accidents,lighting,etc....just still happy to be here anymore. Age creeps up on all of us sooner or later. We have no kids of our own but raised the wife's 3 brothers after their parents passed in a house fire in 93 just shortly before we were married so its kind of the same as having kids in away...one has had to movie back in with us last year....life always has challenges.

I've got my share of old-timer's aches and pains, etc. BUT I can not stress too emphatically that getting regular aerobic and weight-bearing exercise helps almost anyone feel younger, and if anyone's not getting some, they should be.

Of course they always say check with your doctor before starting any exercise regimen. Now we're lawyered up.

At several points in my life, I'd let myself really go to hell. I was too fat, had nicotine and alcohol dependencies, poor eating habits, etc.

It wasn't pleasant at first, but after starting to wean myself from the bad stuff, and getting regular exercise...my vision got better, my legs and feet and hips stopped aching constantly, my blood pressure came way down, and I sleep better. My brain started working better too.

It's not paradise, but there's no way I could still do the work I do (which I enjoy) if I'd let the slide into old age continue unabated...and I'll never go back to just accepting creeping decrepitude.

I used to paint the numerals individually on 25th and 24th scale dashboards , using freakin' toothpicks ! Now I'm lucky if I can even see the unpainted as-cast details !

Arthritis , pinched nerves , herniated discs and failling-through-age eyesight have been my deterrents deom building and drawing ; work and its stresses only exasberate the problem .

Oh , well , at least I get a week-long sabbatical from work in about three weeks !

As a life-long visual artist , eye loss or even loss of eye sight are my biggest concern ; this is followed closely by loss of the use of my arms / hands / fingers.

My left eye's muscle(s) didn't fully-develop , so at age 4 I had to wear corrective lens glasses to strengthen that muscle . Now , 40 years later , I feel pain in my left eye . Nothing constant nor chronic ; probably a compensatory reaction to my right eye aging 'normally' .

Every 6-8 months I get facet pain block injections in my lumbar , and alternately , cervical regions . Just had one of those injections yesterday at 1030 ; this is number 2-of-3 in-a-weelky-series .

The best thing about the first two days after receiving these corticosteroid injections ? I recognise *maybe* 4-5 hours of sleep the first night or two ! Turned-in at 2330 last night , and woke-up at 0315 today ! But , the injections do work ; "it gets worse before it gets better" .

So , yeah ...

Chronologically : 44

Physically : 74

Mentally : 5 or 50

Everybody has medical problems of some sorts or another. If they don't, they will. The older we get, the more our bodies become like old cars, as our parts start wearin' out. All we can do is to take care of yourselves the best we can and try to enjoy life as much as we can, as our days are numbered.
