I served as a forward observer for 105mm howitzer battery with the 1st Battalion, 13th Marines, Peter. Part of my "crazy" is that I joined the Marines when I was 9 years old. My grandfather had died and we were at the wake. It got dead quiet and I turned around to see this guy who must have been 10 or 15 feet tall in Marine Corps dress blues. I asked my Mom who that was. She replied "that's cousin Bob. He's a Marine". I told her that I was going to be a Marine when I grew up.

Fast forward to 1966. I graduated high school. Fast forward to 1968. Seven kids I went to school with (some since kindergarten) had been killed in Vietnam. I took my 2S college deferment and went to the recruiting office in town and signed up for 2 years. A 2 year hitch gave me a 99% guarantee of going to Vietnam - which is what I wanted to get revenge for my friends. Pretty stupid, and maybe a little crazy, huh? Long story short, I got the revenge I was looking for.
