Mrdarkmonkey96 Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 I the the color on my 67 charger, model master 2 part, plum Krazy purple. It says must be clear coat with in three hours, and its start to get a little cool for my preference. If I wait until tomorrow, roughly 22 hours, and then clear it with the one coat lacquer, will it react badly?
Ace-Garageguy Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 (edited) I'm pretty sure you might have adhesion problems. If they go to the trouble to state a recoat window, they probably mean it. HOWEVER, I DO NOT know this from experience. Paint another part purple NOW, and test on IT before you commit to clearing your model. The worst that can happen is you MAY have to scuff the purple base and shoot another coat before you clear. This is common on some automotive basecoat / clearcoat products. slusher Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 I myself have never went by that. i have went 24 hours between coats...
High octane Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 I usually wait 20 minutes in between color and clear coats when painting. I spray the color on one day, and then the clear on the next day and it works for me.
Psychographic Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 (edited) As it's a model and won't be subject to weather, constant washing and flying debris, you should be OK. This is provided you don't plan to do any taping for a second color or anything like that. If the clear is your last part of the painting process I wouldn't worry too much about it. As Bill said, the reason for a limited time for clearing is indeed adhesion. Some modern basecoats dry so fast and hard, the clear won't "bite" into them after a short period of time. If it's not a metallic color you can color sand the base for better adhesion if you are worried. If it is a metallic color and you are still worried about adhesion, I would color sand, recoat with the base, then clear it within the given window by the manufacturer. Mrdarkmonkey96 Posted April 4, 2014 Author Posted April 4, 2014 Thanks for the help everYone. It is indeed a metallic color, so I didnt want to wait until the next day and risk adhesion issues, or have to wetsand the metallic. So I heated up the can and it was about 53 degrees out, so I ran out, and got a medium coat on, and immediately brought the model inside and put it in the warmest room in our house in a box to keep off the dust.
