gtx6970 Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 (edited) I've always thought there were only the 2 cars back then,,,but was doing some browsing today and found pics of 3 different cars AND pics of a rollover. so am curious, did one car get destroyed back then and they replaced it ,,or was there always 3 cars campaigned class #'s i've come up with are #702 , #979 + #980 Anyone able to confirm one way or the other Edited May 31, 2014 by gtx6970
10thumbs Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Hi Bill, As I understand the wrecked car (rear brake problems) was a 64. The team prepared a new one (originally a slant six!) very quickly, even painting the red stripes with a rattle can in the pits. The 63's I'm not sure about. Michael
gtx6970 Posted June 1, 2014 Author Posted June 1, 2014 (edited) The rollover was definitly a 1963 I am wondering if there were always only the 2, one was wrecked and it was replaced,,, still keeping with just the 2 team cars Until just the other day I never knew about a wrecked Ramchargers car,,,,, i was just doing some surfing a few days ago and stumbled onto it. Problem is this is the only picture I can find of the car and theres no way to read the class # on the 1/4 panel. ps, in all my pictures and everything I've found so far Class # 's 702, 979, 980 and 981 also have pics of a car with no class # with Stanford Bros along the bottom of the car # 702 has Stanford Bros along the bottom of the car 979,980 and 981 all l have Hodges Dodges along the rocker . so,,,,,,did 979 get totaled and was replaced ? Reason I ask , is I have 2 Johan 1963 Dodge kits that are rapidly coming to the ft of the line when I get back to the model bench Edited June 1, 2014 by gtx6970
AC Norton Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 like most factory professional teams at the time, usually 2 or 3 cars is likely. however, numbers, decals, even paint details changed week to week in some cases. nhra, ahra, would both assign a driver a yearly, or permanent number for that car. so, depending on where and what track you were racing that event, things changed accordingly. if you study photos of many of the FAMOUS teams of the era, i'm certain you will notice many changes in the same car, in the same season it was campaigned,,,sox, grumpy, landy, dyno don, etc, etc.............hope this helps. when I used to build class cars from the era, many moons ago, I just picked my favorite photo, and got the sandpaper ready.....a.c. the ace.
Daddyfink Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Yes, they only had two cars for '63, with the exception being the Law Man wagon that Eckstrand tested with a stick in it. But, it was too heavy and abandoned. The "Third" car was a replacement for the car they wrecked in testing. It became "980"
10thumbs Posted June 2, 2014 Posted June 2, 2014 I'm happy this is cleared up. Bill, I'm not sure about this either, but a guy doesn't really need two Johan 63 Dodges. Wanna donate one maybe? There is a risk you know that one could get crashed. I'll even trade. I have two Lindberg 64 Dodges that are still in a box. Michael

Michael Mieky, I appreciate the concern But WANT and NEED are 2 very different things . I don't need any of the kits I have stashed away,,,,,but I want ALL of them ,,,and then some Thanks for asking though
10thumbs Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 Bill, it's OK. I wasn't serious. I do understand though, want and need. I feel the same way, as most of here do too. Good luck with your crummy old 63's. Keep us posted on the progress. Michael
