MustangGuy23 Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Working on the Monogram F-250. I'm very satisfied with the chassis, being my first painted model, but I've ruined the body. The paint is awful. I tried to work beyond my skill level. I would strip it all and start over, but I've already glued the windows and interior in. Can I somehow remove the windows and be able to salvage them? Also what's the best way to strip paint?
Ace-Garageguy Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 (edited) Hmmmm....getting the windows out if you used a solvent-type glue is just about impossible without damage. That's one reason a lot of guys use other kinds of glue for clear parts. All is not lost however, as the windows are all either pretty much flat, or single-curvature (not compound curves). That means you can make replacements from clear styrene or acetate relatively easily. Far as stripping paint goes, I prefer EasyOff oven cleaner, but there are lots of options depending on the type of paint you used. Try doing a search. This topic has been discussed endlessly. Go to Google in a separate browser window, type in site:modelcarsmag.com, a space, and the the topic you're looking for. Example: site:modelcarsmag.com alclad Edited July 5, 2014 by Ace-Garageguy
shift13 Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Paint stripping has a pinned post at the top of this section. Just like measure twice cut once. Reasearch a week before you spend 5 mins execution. Maybe thats why I have to many unfinished kits lol
Pim Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 Weather it and then the bad paint won't look out of place.
booboo60 Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 Im thinking a younger builder, so puple pond is out~!! I would put tape on the windows to protect them, then, get like Med sand paper, and put some music on, and start sanding,,just sand it out best you can, and leave the tape on when you spray it again, I would go with dark colors to cover anything up, wait a bit too try" two toning" Paint, good luck
booboo60 Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 Don't try chemical striping my man,,just tape up, and sand,,smooth it out,,any runs, an heavy spots, and make sure windows are taped both inside and out! an spray that bad boy dark blue or black maybe, hit me up if ya need anything,
MustangGuy23 Posted July 6, 2014 Author Posted July 6, 2014 Thanks everyone! The truck was originally gourmet to be a tow rig for my Galaxie 36' but gonna build the Meng F350 for that now. I think I'll sand it down, dechrome the bumpers and spray it flat black. Make it a shop truck.
jbwelda Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 I was going to suggest just buying another one and breaking the interior out of the ruined one, but flexibility is certainly the key! jb
MustangGuy23 Posted July 8, 2014 Author Posted July 8, 2014 Update: I was actually able to pop the interior and all the windows out fairly easily without damage. The build is going a whole new direction. It's now going to be a parts runner as part of a community build. I sanded for 3 hours today getting the old paint off. I'm gonna shoot it flat black and weather it.
disabled modeler Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 If the glue is pretty fresh Castrol Super Clean de-greaser might soften up the glue and it works wonders on removing paint.
