Calling it done, apart from a couple of tiny touch ups around the tinted black windscreen areas. The figure will be repainted by me.

Really enjoyed it, im also doing at present a CV in Met Blue for LAPD, to go along side a marked unit for a felony stop.

Wish there was a quicker way to put pic up, this photobucket thing is BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH slow and tedious. I take pics of every step i go. So lots more pics (well theres about 20 at the mo.) but i can transfer from the very start to photobucket album if people want to see them.

Totally different to military modelling. Had to think of new ways to do things and other problems i have never run into before.

I don't know how much accuracy you were striving for but if you were interested in doing some minor touch ups to make it accurate, I could tell you how. I worked with the LASD in a volunteer capacity for many years. Hell, I even did a ride-along in an LASD 1997 CV back in 2007 so these are still fresh in my mind.

I see. What I was asking though was if you wanted me to tell you how you could make the car look correct, like one of the LASD cars of the era. I don't recall many unmarked units being used during that era, apart from the detective ones. Uniformed officers mostly seemed to have gone around in marked cars in those days, unlike today where many specialized uniform officers drive around in unmarked patrol cars.

thanks, any tips would be cool to know. I couldnt find any early CV images they used, only the later one but no kit is done of that, hence i have done the Lindberg one.

Got it ;) Before I go into more detail, what is this car supposed to be? A traffic car? A gang/task force car with all the bells and whistles? Or just a detective's car?

Posted

From what i found out, detectives only have a single front red light, infront of the rear view mirror, while traffic cars have red/blue flashing ones. Being in the UK i dont know much about the LASD, although i did like the 10-8 Officer on patrol tv show, that got cancelled 10 years ago. I had read on Wiki what i could so know the basics

Just info would be cool to know. For future builds etc . Anything you can point out that will help

As I mentioned earlier, I don't recall the LASD using unmarked vehicles in those days for general patrol duties. That fad didn't start to appear until around 1999/2000 or so. All of them have been in this color:

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4053/4633338241_80f0138fee.jpg

But let's say you decide to build a 1997 LASD Crown Vic (only year this body style was purchased) and you wanted to do a sort of "fantasy build" of an unmarked LASD patrol vehicle as it would have looked during that era. These are the changes you would need to make of your car (aside from the color):

-chrome spotlights

-paint the side trim molding black

-remove the rear emergency lights on the right side (back then they only had blue/yellow lights on the left side).

-remove the radar from the dash.

-paint the interior the standard blue color and DO NOT paint the dash with wood trim. Only the 1992-1995 models had the faux wood strip on the dash.

-equip it with the prisoner partition that comes with the Lindberg CV kits. The separators of the era had two square openings in the middle that should be easy to create. You can see part of it here: http://www.policecarwebsite.net/fc/capdcars/lasd400.jpg

-It needs to have the single steady red light that you spoke of. ALL LAPD and LASD vehicles used this set up until 2004 and 2006, respectively.

-the MDT (computer) and console are not completely accurate but very close enough.

-equip it with an Ithaca shotgun mounted in front of the partition. You can use the shotgun in the CV kit but cut down the

extended shell tube to make it accurate.

-and finally, you can use the full wheel covers as this is what the LASD used on their 1997s. However, your current wheels look good if you're going for an old CV still in service which has been given the newer 1998-2002 steel wheels and chrome caps. That would be accurate.

cool info ta. I found some images with the pair of 2 yellow/blue lights but most were only 1 pair on the left. I thought i would go for the pair just to be different :-)

The spot lights were chrome but i painted them, i had seen both, and some cars with one of each i guess due to a replaced one.

Useful info. Wish i had known before did it. I had spent a couple of weeks looking for pics and info online.

Also, the figure's chevrons on the sleeve show a rank that doesn't exist in the LASD.

ta. i hadnt seen any photos with them.

Cool model.. That would fit in with a diorama of a pullover...

Thats what im doing. A felony stop, with a marked b/w Although not SAFD. I was thinking LAPD. on a Monte Carlo SS black car thing...it looks gangsta to me after watching End of Watch :-)

thanks. enjoyed it. The wheels where a pain, i guess for some die cast so the centre hole wasnt right. Got it sorted though. Got a couple more on the go too. 6 More are on the way from the US.

Noticed Revell list a CV for later this year, Snaptite..i cant see it being the same tooling, but why they would want to do the same CV i dont know, the later shaped one would have been ideal

Just a bit of trivia, your rear light set up was used like that only on the 2006 models.

Here are the LASD ranks:

If you're ever doing another Southern California car and need any info, feel free to shoot me a PM.

thanks. seen that before as Wiki is where i turn too for info lol. I was getting lost and confused, well more like going round in circles trying to understand things too much.

Im doing a Lindberg Charger LAPD car. I have found a pic of 2 next to each other, one with silver wheels, and door scuffs, and the other black wheels (which i will do) and no door scuffs. I love looking at tiny detail like that.

Great. With the LAPD CV, the correct interior color would be the standard blue without the faux wood on the dash. No radar on the dash and the partition would be clear.

If you need more info on those, go ahead and send me a PM.

Great. With the LAPD lightbar, don't forget that you can use the traffic signal arrow stick from the Lindberg CV Ohio kit to add behind the LAPD light bar.

If you need more info on those, go ahead and send me a PM.

yeah i added that, i noticed it saw much higher than a standard light bar. This is where i am with it now. Although gone to a dark grey interior.

This is a flat blue that i really like, but it was a car spray can so went on too thick, so at the moment stripping the paint off and will do a better thinner paint job

And just playing around with the layout to have with the crashed Gangster car. on a street, behind is a sidewalk and to the rear of the base is a mesh panel fence i will make, with a inch or 2 behind, that will be a basket ball court. with a couple of teenagers looking through at the cops.
