Jim B Posted January 1, 2010 Author Posted January 1, 2010 Mark, I never built the turbine powered Astro, and the kits bring pretty big bucks on eBay. Rumor has it that someone is casting that engine. Apparently Mack experimented with turbine engines in the Cruiseliner & Superliner. Ray, yes, I think the 1973 & 1974 bruchuers had the same orange & white truck with the different stripe pattern.
disabled modeler Posted January 1, 2010 Posted January 1, 2010 that cool someones possibly going to cast the engine.
AMT Pacemakers Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 That is looking very good. Nice paint job your buddy did!! Just wondering what other color combos would say 1970's? CCSS
Pete1980 Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 Cant say it enough looks really good.Give your friend a pat on the back n a shot, he did very nice.
Jim B Posted January 5, 2010 Author Posted January 5, 2010 (edited) Thanks. Here are some Astro brochures from the 1970s showing color schemes that GMC offered: 1972 1973 1974 1977 Edited January 5, 2010 by Jim B
Kostas Parchas Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 Good looking truck, amazing paint job!!! Kostas.
Old Albion Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 Jim, We have been graced with some superb examples of paint work on the forum before. But this one is amazing. I am lost for words as to how your freind achieved that look and finish. Well no excuses now for not finishing. The only thing is I would be very wary about handling that cab in case the paint work got damaged. With regards to seat covers try the ones from KFS: Look in the decals section: http://www.kitformservices.com/decalpics/Seat-covers-twin-1.jpg Hope this helps. Dave
Jim B Posted January 17, 2010 Author Posted January 17, 2010 (edited) Thank for the link on the seatcover decals. Pretty cool. Oh, I'm definately being careful with this cab! As far as finishing it up, I'm heading down stairs rigt now to work on the dash. Edited January 31, 2010 by Jim B
Jim B Posted January 31, 2010 Author Posted January 31, 2010 So, the last few days (weekends), I've been working on the interior bucket for my GMC Astro. Now that it's done, I figured I'd snap a few shots of it before I put it into the cab. Funny thing, even though this is a GMC; the steering wheel has the Chevrolet Bowtie on it.
studioman3 Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Jim, Excellent! Very nice looking Chevy Astro lol, You have a good eye and a steady hand my friend. Tim
Jim B Posted January 31, 2010 Author Posted January 31, 2010 Thanks for the complment. It's coming along. I really want to have this wrapped up in the next couple of weeks. I think I'm going to use the Aulsowe round air horns as the ones in the kit are pretty bad. I'm not so sure about the "steady hand" thing. I take a lot of Mulligans, if you now what I mean.
Jim B Posted February 16, 2010 Author Posted February 16, 2010 Well, it's finally done. It's your typical gap-toothed AMT Astro, but I like it. I added the PE stacks & wipers from KFS, aluminum horns for Auslowe, and 1/8" screen for tread plate between the frame rails. The air ride suspension is from the AMT GMC General kit (not 100% accurate for an Astro) as are the wheels & tires. The front axle steers. Enjoy!
lizardlust Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 It certainly was worth the effort, Jim - probably one of the best examples of the Astro built up that I have ever seen! KUDOS to you, sir!!!
studioman3 Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Jim, Nice ending to a great build. I love realism that the PE wipers and stacks add, and though Chris told me how to roll them, they are a PITA for sure, but well worth it! Tim
Jim B Posted February 16, 2010 Author Posted February 16, 2010 Thanks, guys. I appreciate the comments. I think I managed to capture that groovy, factory-fresh 1970s look with this one. Studioman3, I like the wide set stacks on COEs, and with the repop kit the KFS stacks were the only option. All of the parts (except the stacks themselves) were in the box. I think they came out ok. The hardest part of the stacks for me was getting them straight on the truck, and as you can see I wasn't totally successful.
disabled modeler Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Hi JIM....WOW!...That is looking SWEET! I need to learn how to stripe like that....Mark
Turbo590 Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Jim... Turned out nice indeed. Hope to see it soon Kurt
Jim B Posted February 16, 2010 Author Posted February 16, 2010 Thanks, guys. Kurt, unless it falls off a shelf between now and November I'll have it at Fulton.
