dimaxion,

Mopar engines from the 273, 318, 340, and 360 were ALL "LA" engines, the meaning of "LA" from Mopar was "Light A". Light A being a lighter weight version of the Mopar "A" engines prior to the LA and RB engine types. To go into it further the A engines a lot of times were "Poly-Head" engines, which were really bulky and heavy designs.....ALL of the Poly-Head engines could have been fitted with Hemi-heads as well of the time making them a bit more performance engines. This insues to go to the demise of the A engines when the lighter counter part came about of the "LA" type. These engines ALL had their distributors in the rear to the drivers side of the cam/block center. Standing in front of the car, this would be to your right of block center.

Now you speak of the big block Mopars, they were the "B" type blocks, standard deck height, B for Big Block.....These engines were as follows: 350, 361, 383. THEN another change happened so that these "B" engines could be made to bigger cubic inch displacements. They were a Raised Block, or "RB" engine types, they were as follows as well: 383, 400, 413, 426, and 440. ALL the mentioned B and RB engines were WEDGE-HEAD engines. The normal type. You then had the off-shoot, of the 426 Wedge, that became the basis to the 426 Hemi, the Hemi-Heads were to be bolt on accessories to this block as the 426 Wedge for the time '63, was maxed out with the design of it called the 426 Max-Wedge.

SO in all reality, the 426 Hemi truly is a "RB" blocked engine! They just kept building upon it to go as far as the 540 Cubic inch monster.....For a single block casting, it done well considering the block from the 426 could be stroked and bored to the 540.

These B and RB engines ALL had their distributors to the front passenger side of the cam/block center, on an angle. Standing in front of the car, this would be to your left, of block center on about a 45 degree angle!

Just my 2 cents worth

No 340s came with 2 bbl carb btw. They were all 4 bbl or 6 bbl. Up to 70 I think they were also high compression engines.After 70 saw cast cranks in 340s also

Paul

1968-1970 340 were all forged crank and high compression (10.5:1) ;

1971 was still forged crank ; heads were redesigned (emissions concession) and were shared with the then-new 360** (which itself was a 2 Bbl , C-Body-only engine until 1974) . Compression ratio dropped a marginal amount ( one-quarter point ) to 10.25:1 .

1972 340 had its compression dropped to 8.5:1 ; forged crank lasted until mid-late calendar year . Intake valve sized was pared back to 1.88" (from 2.02" , 1968-1971) .

1973 340 were all cast crank (booooo !!) and small valve .

** = some very early 360's were equipped with 2.02" intake valve heads .

426-HEMI:

The 400 cid was a B-engine not a RB engine. But the 383 was built as B-engine and an RB-engine. Yes the HEMI was RB-engine, the 426 cid wedge was redrilled to take the new HEMI heads for NASCAR and the NHRA. The old 426 wedge engine was re-enforced to take the new HEMI heads but basicly the same RB-engine. The old A engine could not take the 1 gen Hemi heads, but were very close. In face the A block and LA bock were very close, the heads made the big differents. In fact a electronic distrutor will fit in the old A engine and 1 first gen HEMI. A and LA engine dio have a lot in commen. As a Mopar guy with over 8 cars at this time and being aroung Mopars sice the early 60's I do know a little about them. My first car was 1939 Dodge, first car that moved the shifter from the floor to the column. An I can tell you a lot more about the firsts of Mopar.
