revell stateside vs. revell germany

Recommended Posts

I've noticed one thing, well a couple things about a peticular series of revell issued kits (older) Ford Escorts and it had me comparing between kits

each to their own pros and cons

the kits in check are the revell ford escort kits

the first i want to say is a red issued (original) xr1

pros

~ good decal sheet with seat inset decals

~ good subject matter

~ nice wheels/ tires (real rubber)

~ minimal flash on most examples i've come across

cons

~ some plastic seems brittle on some

2nd kit inline would be a more latter issed (still early 80's) escort "turbo"

Pros

~ again good decals

~ unique parts special front facia and special hood

~many parts shared from other escort

cons

~ cannot think of any

Third kit is revell germany (molded in white) escort kamei

very cool kit as in this issue theres custom steering wheel, special "ford" "RS" wheels and side ground effects different more aggresive front and rear facia, kit includes other front an d rear bumpers that can be built stateside specs......

Pros

~ unique parts bumper facias wheels and ground effects

cons

~decal sheet had tissue protecting decals got stuck to sheet nearly ruined decals

~ lots of flash and sink marks that were not an issue on above 2 mentioned kits......

this makes me wonder of other revell germany kits if there are similar issues or if its a leftover mold gettin new light overseas?

i'm interested to see what folks know pics welcomed i'll try to take pics of box art asap

I can't comment on the problems with your particular kits but I have noticed many recent Revell of Germany kits I've bought have warp issues.

The DTM cars, a Porsche, and a couple of others. Bodies and windows were a couple I can remember right now. I have no idea why it seems to just be the Revell of Germany kits but I'm not buying anymore because of this.

I've found that some of the recent ROG releases are excellent. I have the Mini Cooper, the 1968 era VW Beetle and both versions of the Trabant. I've found them as good as any Tamiya kit. The detail is great, and they have things you just don't see on other kits like shoulder belts.

I'm working on the Trabant Universal and it nearly builds itself. Everything fits very well, even when I was looking at engine parts that at first glance looked like they were dissimilar but suddenly just snapped in place. I'm enjoying the build very much. I have found the tooling well defined and the kits I have are molded very well. They are doing their molding in Poland.

On the down side, I've found them to be over detailed, like some Japanese kits. Microscopic little parts, such as the fender top trim that should have been molded as part of the body, and a trailer hitch that has a separate ball the size of an ant! They could have made the kits a bit simpler.

The only negative thing I can say about RoG is the boxes. The flat boxes with the opening in the end is not as good as the boxes where you can lift of the top like on Revell US/AMT/Moebius/Italeri/Tamiya/Fujimi/Aoshima and I guess almost everyone else.

When I can take the lid of the box I can use both the box and the lid as storage for parts during building while the opening ends means that I have to take everything out and make space for it in the bench.

Not a big issue since the ktis look to be very good, just a bit strange. The only kit I got that have the opening in the ends that is not from RoG is a 1:35 beetle kit made by AeroPlast.

Older RoG kits do however have lids that can be lifted off, they are all releases from the 80s and older so I guess they changed sometime in the 90s as I rememer the first RoG kit I built was the Peterbilt 377 in 1998 and that had the style of box we still see today.

You must have been unlucky with the DTM kits. I've built all three of the recent issues and they were superb kits, almost on a par with Tamiya in quality.

I agree about the boxes though - more like a 'packet' than a box.

I can't fault any of the later Revell Ag kits, I've built the Mini Cooper, VW Beetle and I'm in the middle of building the Trabant 601, all cracking kits, parts fit on all of them were first class, I'll be buying more Revell Ag kits in the future .....

My problem with the DTM kits was the glass. The side windows were warped and so was a front windshield. Couldn't get them straightened out with hot water. Revell was good enough to send some replacements but I recall one of the side windows were again warped.

I agree the kits rival Tamiya in quality but just don't want to press my luck with another frustrating batch of warped parts.
