DDC Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 My first was a snap together monogram P40 kityhawk. My dad and I built it when I was 4ish. I've got bits and pieces of it, and I've since bought an identical boxing, For nostalgics sake ! The first one I built myself, I was 5, was the Matchbox Dassault Mirage 2 Seater, and I painted it as an RAAF bird. 24 years later I've still got it :-)
Dingo5162 Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 Wow ya all beat me in starting to bild models, would U belive m eif I said I didn't start until I was 24 yrs old or somewhere around that age and that is because before that I was into (when I had the spare time) fishing, scouting, bush walking camping and all those outdoor stuff etc;. When I lost my license as an interstate coach driver and had to work in a factory to get money I then had to look for a hobby that didn't need a vehicle to get around and seeing that the LHS was walking distance away I swung into model building and mainly trucks. CorvairJim Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 I remember this one clearly enough. My parents both worked in the early 1970's, so we had a housekeeper/babysitter to take care of my brothers and me after school until they got home. For Christmas 1971, she gave me the 1:25 MPC 1972 Corvette coupe (that's back when MPC offered Corvette annuals as both coupes and convertibles in both 1:25 and 1:20 scale!). I had just turned 9 at the time. Over the next month I managed to screw it up pretty badly, but that didn't stop me from being willing to try again when she got me the MPC '73 Camaro for Christmas. That one went together pretty easily with a coat of Testor's gold brush paint on the body and the decals from the '71 'Vette! After that Camaro, I was well and truly hooked and was building at a rate of a couple models a month... until girls and 1:1 cars took over my time a few years later. I still have most of those builds and have plans to rebuild many of them as they should have been built in the first place. At least the ones that aren't too far gone with my youthful attempts at customization, that is. After a hiatus of maybe a decade, my (now ex) wife surprised me by bringing me another model to build, an MPC Fiero (I forget what year that one was). From that point, I've been back at it, and have built probably a hundred models in the past nearly 30 years.
LAone Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 i was 8, my mom bought me a dodge stealth along with the brush paint set and tube glue. i remember cause i spilled the red paint onto the couch and flipped the cushion. about a week later she saw the stain...lols i can honestly say that my mom was/still the bigget supporter of my hobby/hobbies. kept me out of BIG trouble. i built for a couple of years, then stopped till i got into jr high and started again. i was just goofing around with them making lowrider hoppers. no real building till around 11 grade, then stopped again in 2003. i bug started again in 2008 when my wife asked me why i stopped, my answer. "I dont know" she suggested that i went and got my stuff from my moms garage. now she supports the building part...not so much the collecting part...lols sorry for the long story...
ZTony8 Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 The first kit I built myself was an AMT '60 Buick hardtop that I received for Christmas 1959 so I was just short of 5 1/2 years old.Yes I screwed it up badly and, yes,it's been gone for years. My Dad had built me a some of the AMT '59 annuals before I got the '60 Buick and then built a few more for me after that.He built a Big T for me at Christmas 1962 and then a Big Deuce the following year (probably because of the high parts count of the big scale kits). But by then (probably sometime in 1961) I had started to build more on my own and by 1962,when I was 8,I built all the 1/25th stuff on my own(yes-still badly).
