what makes this special is while ford showed some pics of a very early 71 boss 302 car it was always accepted that the car was destroyed till this guy bought this particular car from a elderly lady on ebay of all places. what makes it so cool is the car is pretty much all there except of course the boss 302 engine! its rough but in very sound shape. there are only two pics of this car back in 71 as a boss 302 car but what is very interesting is there is a pic of a guy standing next to a early 71 boss 351 that is setup identical to this car (ie non ram air with mach 1 style hockey stripes) with what looks to be a very homade boss 351 decal.

Hello everybody. I'm the owner of that 1971 Boss 302 prototype. Actually, it turns out that the car wasn't actually a "prototype", but was the only regular production 1971 Boss 302 ever made by Ford. That also makes it the last Boss 302 ever built by Ford, period. The black and white photo of the Motor Trend Boss 302 car most likely is of a Pilot car, used for press photos, but it has never been found.

We think my car was later used by Ford as the Prototype Boss 351 publicity car seen in the photos of the Grabber Yellow car in the desert with the models. This would be the explanation for the crooked decals "51". Probably done after the cancellation of the Boss 302 production. If you want to see a lot more stuff and a lot more explanations, including info from Donald Farr, editor of Mustang Monthly Magazine, Check out the Feb. 2008 issue of Mustang Monthly (it's on the cover!), and click on these links:

I hope a model of the car is made, that would be very cool. It wouldn't take much to modify the Grabber Yellow 1971 Mustang Sportsroof model that is already out there. They could use the 1970 Boss 302 motor, the plain '71 hood (but with the 1971 Boss 351 style blackout) and the 1971 Mach 1 trim pieces. Needs 1967 Shelby Magstar rims. Very doable without too much work.

Here's the car today:
