Quick GMC Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 I hung a few of these small shelves in our son's room to put a couple things on. I had one I didn't install sitting on my desk at home. I took out my 67 Chevelle that had a major accident and repaired it. I went to put it away when I looked at the shelf and thought it might be just the right size. I got them at Home Depot, I believe they come in a two pack. they also have several other sizes. Everyone is always moaning about space issues, these you can hand anywhere on the wall. When done right, they are solid. Here is the shelf at Home Depot. I cannot find the 8" shelf on the website, but if you go in the store they have them there. Comes with all the mounting hardware Back
jbwelda Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 how do they actually mount to the wall? thanks for the tip! jb
Quick GMC Posted February 3, 2015 Author Posted February 3, 2015 (edited) If you look at the rear picture, there is a large slot. You screw a wood mounting block that comes inside, to the wall. Then you slide the shelf over it and it sets in place. The shelf lowers about a 1/2" down onto the wood block. There is a lip on the inside top part of the actual shelf, so it can't slide off. If there is an earthquake, it might slip around a little, but it won't come down. Use some museum wax on the tires to stick it to the shelf or something and you're good to go. You can take the wax off and I would guess some denatured alcohol would remove the rest of the wax residue. Unless you paint the tire treads, it should be harmless. Here. Don't mind the screws, I don't know what I was doing. The screws go in the other way to mount it to the wall. This is what it comes with Here I am doing the opposite; Sliding the block in and lifting it up. When you mount to the wall, you will be sliding the shelf onto the block and setting it down. dartman Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 Thanks for the Idea quick, looks like I need to go shopping.
Guest Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 That is a cool idea! You could arrange your models in an abstract pattern, to creTe a really interesting display. Models and art at the same time! Love it!
1930fordpickup Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 How close are these to the display cases they sell for models? Thinking dust cover.
cobraman Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 I like those in fact had 3 in black that I put in my daughters room for some of her knick knacks. Too much dust here in Arizona to use them for models I think. They sure do look nice.
