what putty to use

Trying to make a cowl hood. Used tamiya white putty and tried squadron products green putty. Not to happy with the turn out.

So regular automotive body filler and glaze will work?

Yup. Regular "bondo" in the big cans is really too coarse in my opinion. Use 2-part finishing glaze. I used to swear by USC Icing (I build real cars and always have it in stock) but the Bondo Brand stuff shown above is even finer-grained and comes in small packages.

WRP(Wilde Racing Products) makes nice hood scoops of styrene, 1 pr. for like $4. I use them a lot. I also use the two part glazing and the MMD green putty on my builds, judge for yourself.
