taaron76 Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 I am doing some wiring on my '66 Shelby and wanted to wire the batter, alternator, and starter up via a solenoid. Do any of you guys have any suggestions on what you could use for the solenoid itself? I made a small one out of steering box from leftover parts from a previous because it resembled the shape closest to the real thing, but it might be a little big. I'll have to post a pic later to show you what I did. I figured I'd pick you brain to see what you did. Thanks! Tim
taaron76 Posted February 10, 2015 Author Posted February 10, 2015 This is my first attempt at a solenoid. Alternator wire goes on top. Free hanging wire goes to starter. Thoughts?
afx Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 (edited) Tim, here is a very basic wiring diagram that should get you going. An internet search always helps me when I need information like this. Do a search on the MCM forum as well. Chances are someone else has asked a similar question. Edited February 10, 2015 by afx
taaron76 Posted February 10, 2015 Author Posted February 10, 2015 Thanks for the reply! I'm good with how it functions and the connections, etc, and I did a search, but couldn't find anything particular to this topic. Was hoping I wasn't reinventing the wheel. Thanks! Tim
Ace-Garageguy Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 The solenoid you've made there is kinda massively huge. It looks to be about half as big as the battery, and it should really be about a quarter of what you have there.
taaron76 Posted February 10, 2015 Author Posted February 10, 2015 ... and I was hoping someone used a particular part, or electronic piece, in order to achieve that solenoid look. Hopefully I can come up with something. I knew it was a little oversized, but you can't fault me for trying. lol Tim
Guest Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 I made one from a piece of .100 styrene rod (for the body) and a piece of .010 for the top and mount. I drilled a hole through the body of it to run the wire through from the starter to the battery.
