Alfalfa Posted February 25, 2015 Author Posted February 25, 2015 (edited) Hi Scott. The leather i have ist extremly difficult to get! it is only 0,2-0,6 mm (Metric) thin. Like paper and not cheap. But i think if a Modellkit kosts a many lot, than dont save with the Equipment who brings the real touch to my 1:8 scale Kits. If i see the nice after market pieces from Modell Motor Cars.....Oh my god! So awesome Parts for buy, and my wife is going to kill me if i can not resist....The Problem is when i ordering something from the USA, the shippment is very expensive and in Addition Comes Zoll (19%) in Germany. I Need to went to the Zoll (In Germany we call it so?) Office and pay. Its Stress.. It worth only if i order something beoutifull parts from there if the order is big. If it is a big order, its a very expensive order.... By the way, i try to make many thinks by my self scratch. But the parts from MMC are very nice...... Edited February 25, 2015 by Alfalfa
Twokidsnosleep Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 The fine leather you can get in Europe is the best in the world.....Italy, Germany, England, France they produce gorgeous stuff They can make hides very thin and beautiful in colour and texture and so thin like you mention One of my retirement dreams is to go to Florence and take some leatherwork courses Cato gave me a link for a leather source in England last year actually I like that you scratch build ..that is the highest form of modelling I have three books on small metal lathe and milling techniques and plan on buying some equipment when I get a new shop built

thinkbig Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 Well, I got some goat or lambskin leather from dealers. For them it's only scrap, cause there is no use for gloves and pouches, for it is too skinny. They usually just sort it out and trash it in the can. They don't even can imagine, what some insane people will pay for some piece of hide 0.1mm thick. Unfortunately, the range of colors is poor. You can get them in a light brown or a light grey. Had no problem until now, to get them airbrushed with waterbased acrylic flat paints. I hope, that Alfalfa seconds me, who got a large part of Italian capretta hide by me. It's all a question of research for the material, that will fit your model. This stuff is almost paperthin and moving it along curved edges is almost no problem. So is the piping made of genuine leather. Keep your eyes open to look for 0.5mm leather piping. No more trouble with any coated wire a.s.o.

Cato Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 Alex, did you abandon this build or just us? Hoping for an update as a LOT of useful tech info came out of this thread. As you can see, I stole er, borrowed your idea for faux wood burl. Except instead of adhesive shelf paper, I used printed photos of the pattern I wanted and glued it section by section. Then acrylic clear. Please continue with the build; there's lots of great experience here to share:
