As the heading states...does anybody know of a really good tutorial on making 2-part rtv molds for casting resin???? Doesn't have to be just car model related...could be for figures, sci-fi, military stuff...whatever, just a good tutorial.

Forgot to add this...I've been looking all over figure forums, military model forums, etc...having a hard time finding anything decent. I just went to the Reynold's Advanced Materials resin casting seminar yesterday... it was just OK...they really didn't say much about 2-part molds that " we " would use to cast a car body.

Yes, I have a model or two that I'd like to cast soon. Some parts & other things too...

Thanks for any info. :-)

There is an entire series available here FREE from one of the most highly respected manufacturers of mold-making materials for professionals, Freeman Manufacturing and Supply.

No BS opinions from people who haven't done it, no idiot advice like using olive oil as a mold release. Just factual information that will work RIGHT, EVERY time.

And here is a series from Polytek Development Company, another respected manufacturer of similar products. I've used products from all 3 of these companies, followed their instructions carefully, and I've had 100% successful results.

PS: You will have to dig a little bit on your own in these 3 series to find what you want. I assure you...it's in there. I've made one and two-part silicone and urethane molds, as I've already said, using the materials and procedures illustrated.

Check out the "Brick in the Yard Molding Supply" YouTube channel. Lots of excellent videos on all kinds of mold making. This one is specifically for a simple 2-part RTV mold:

I can't figure out how to link you to it, but if you search "resin casting tutorials", there is a 23 minute video one on YouTube by vegeta8259 that I used to get started. It doesn't show car bodies, but it is pretty good for the basics.

Most of the live tutorials for the methods will be fine, pick your favorite. As for what to use for mold release and the like, go with the TYPE of mold release the manufacturer recommends. Doesn't have to be the exact product they recommend because it's usually quite expensive as in overpriced and repackaged.

I personally use stuff from Tap Plastics, their own brand. I use their RTV and their Resin. I like their RTV, because I don't need a mold release from the object being copied, only betweent he different layers of RTV. They recommend their liquid, paste, or powdered wax. Problem is a tiny little bottle is like 15 dollars. NO WAY. It takes a bit longer but I use automotive wax. I use the spray on stuff right now, but if you use the paste, just don't wipe it off like on a car, leave the streaks, it works better.

Wax is though is what is recommended by TAP. Don't use it on anything else unless they recommend a wax based release agent. I once made the mistake of thinking that a good oil would do. Yeah right I sealed a very expensive seat in a rather stout cylinder of RTV.
